The Importance Behind a Dog’s Name <\/h1>\n\n\n\n

A dog\u2019s name is the single most important word which they\nwill learn. It will stick with them for the rest of their life, and it is the\nkey to helping them understand when directions or commands are aimed at him,\nand when to respond. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogs have the language skills<\/a> of around a two year old and so it can be quite confusing for them if they hear the word \u2018sit\u2019 during a conversation you\u2019re having with a friend. However they learn to know that when they hear their name, the words to follow are for them to listen to. Choosing your dog’s name should be a fun and exciting task for you and your family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Right Name Is Important for Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The name you choose for your dog is important for a number of reasons says David Woods from My Pet\u2019s Name<\/a>; it helps to create a bond with your dog and associate positive training to your dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short names are usually better, but if you\u2019re already set on\na longer name, perhaps you could find a way to shorten it to use in important\nsituations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A one or two syllable name is often the best length name for\na dog as it allows you to quickly call it and get their attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re able to quickly get their attention, you\u2019re much\nmore likely to be able to train them with new commands more efficiently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst we\u2019re on the topic of commands, make sure that the name you\nchoose doesn\u2019t sound similar to commands<\/a> which you are likely to use with\nyour dog or even other words that you use on a daily basis for that matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, if you call your pup Ray, he might have a\ndifficult time learning the command \u2018stay\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using hard consonants such as K and C can also help your dog\nwith training. It is believed by some experts that these consonants have higher\nfrequencies which help dogs to focus much more quickly than names without these\nletters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Dog Will Have This Name for Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important to remember that when you choose your dog\u2019s\nname, he will be known by that name for the rest of his life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, if you give your kids the task of choosing a\nname, you might want to make sure it\u2019s not too out there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will have to yell this name across dog parks, shout it whilst you\u2019re out on walks and call it when it\u2019s time for din dins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picture yourself doing all of these things, or even better actually give it a go. Go to your back door and see if you feel comfortable shouting out the name you\u2019ve chosen. If you do, the chances are you\u2019ve chosen a good one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One last thing to consider when thinking about this name that will last for the duration of your dog\u2019s life is to ensure it\u2019s a timeless one. Try not to choose a name based on a current trend, or movie that\u2019s likely to be forgotten within a couple of years, unless you want to have to explain his name every time a stranger asks what his name is! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Name can Provide Insight into the Dog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re out walking and you hear someone shout \u2018Come,\nBullet\u2019, the likelihood is, that you\u2019ll know just from their name that they are\na quick and lively dog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise for if you hear a name which is related to another\naspect of their personality, or even their appearance.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your dog has a funny and quirky personality, you might\neven want to choose a funny name which reflects that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to name your dog based on their appearance,\nthere are a whole loads of features which you can draw inspiration from. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you can use the color of their coat to think of a\nname, a popular example is finding a foreign word for their color, for example\nyou could call a Black dog, Noir which is French for Black! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, whatever name you choose for you dog, will be\nthe one that stays with it for life. It should make you smile, and be quick and\neasy to say.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
