Should You Make Your Dog Go Vegan?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Veganism has been on the rise for a number of years now. Just five years ago, there were 276,000 vegans in the UK alone. Today that number stands at well over 600,000<\/a> \u2013 more than quadrupling in only half a decade \u2013 and you don\u2019t have to look too hard to find out why. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vegan Rising<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Over recent\nyears, more and more reports, films and documentaries have come out detailing\nthe \u2018truth\u2019 behind the meat industry, leaving many people feeling appalled at\nthe conditions certain animals are left to suffer when moving from farm to\nfork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just look at the statistics: 90% of the UK\u2019s chicken production involves intensive windowless sheds which each house approximately 35,000 chickens<\/a>; dairy cows produce up to 10 times<\/a> more milk than they should naturally; and more than 97%<\/a> of pigs spend their lives indoors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no surprise\nthen that many people want to stand up against the meat industry, following the\nexample set by political ethicist Mohatma Gandhi \u2013 being the \u2018change they want\nto see in the world\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans vs. Dogs <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

However, while\nit may be all well and good for humans <\/em>to stand up against the meat\nindustry \u2013 avoiding meat and dairy produce in their diet \u2013 is it fair to\ninflict the same kind of principles and diet onto our pets?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the vegan movement has continued to grow, more and more dog food companies are now jumping on the bandwagon, developing vegan-friendly dog products in place of meat-based alternatives. But is this giving our dogs this type of food actually sustainable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Certain owners who have adopted vegan\/vegetarian diets for their dogs have highlighted the benefits of choosing to do so. \u2018Increased mobility\u2019, \u2018decreased allergies\u2019, \u2018improved bowel movements\u2019 and \u2018excellent weight maintenance\u2019 are all benefits that Lindsay Rubin, vice president of vegan dog food company V-Dog, states that owners can enjoy when implementing her company\u2019s plant-based dog food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there is no evidence<\/a> to back any of these claims up \u2013 and herein lies the problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The current lack\nof scientific evidence proving that vegan\/vegetarian diets are beneficial to\ndogs speaks for itself. If it really was beneficial, there\u2019d be proof of it.\nCurrently, there isn\u2019t, so the case has to be closed, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, no \u2013 it\u2019s not as black and white as that. In essence, a dog\u2019s diet needs a balance of proteins, starches and fats \u2013 all of which can be found in meat. Therefore, while it is technically possible to feed dogs a plant-based diet, by choosing to do so, this places more of an onus on the owner to ensure their pooch is getting all the nutrients and vitamins<\/a> they require. If they aren\u2019t, they could actually be putting the dog\u2019s health at risk, potentially leading to expensive vet bills and pet insurance<\/a> claims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogs Aren\u2019t Vegetarian <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many vets state that it\u2019s important for owners to remember that dogs are omnivores<\/a> (i.e. they eat meat and plants), rather than simply herbivores (i.e. they only eat plants). Understanding this key difference is vital to ensuring dogs stay healthy when being fed a vegetarian or vegan-based diet, since they won\u2019t necessarily be getting the nutrients they would have done from a meat-based alternative. Plant-based diets are typically higher in fiber for example, meaning dogs won\u2019t be able to digest them as easily as traditional meat-based dog food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should a vegan decide to pass on their beliefs and principles in the dog food they buy, it\u2019s important to ensure that the manufacturer has the right credentials as a legitimate vet-approved dog food company. The dog food itself should also include enough protein, essential amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12 (cobalamin), vitamin A & D and methionine \u2013 all of which should be available on the external label. If the nutritional information isn\u2019t listed, avoid it or double-check with your vet before you decide to buy it. Otherwise, you could harm your dog, potentially requiring specialist veterinary equipment<\/a> to help determine any related issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vegan Verdict<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The decision to\nadopt a plant-based diet in dogs really depends on the owner involved: their\nvalues, their beliefs, and their ability to bypass the lack of scientific\nevidence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generally\nspeaking, choosing to do so isn\u2019t<\/em> sustainable, since dogs aren\u2019t simply\ntiny humans that we have the right to alter thousands of years of evolution\nover. They have different requirements both nutritionally and morally so,\nregardless of what an owner\u2019s personal dietary beliefs might be, they could\nactually be doing more harm than good moving their dog onto a diet that\u2019s not\nright for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until the\nscience says otherwise, I for one will be keeping my dog on a meat-based diet \u2013\nwhether I, as a vegetarian, like it or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
