You\u2019ve likely been\nhearing a lot about novel coronavirus on the news. The virus is also called\nCOVID-19 or simply \u201ccoronavirus.\u201d The world is basically shut down as countries\ntry to protect citizens from the potentially deadly contagion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While people are worried for themselves, there is another subset they are concerned about: their pets. What should dog<\/a> and cat owners know about the coronavirus pandemic?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nis COVID-19?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCoronavirus\u201d is\nactually the term for the entire family of viruses. The SARS outbreak of 2003\nwas a type of coronavirus. The \u201819\u2019 in the name \u2018COVID-19\u2019 refers to 2019, when\nthe current outbreak first started. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The virus that is\ncurrently sweeping the globe is a new strain of coronavirus that\u2019s never been\nseen in humans before. That means we don\u2019t know how to treat it. The best thing\nwe can do is self-isolate to keep it from spreading further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As happy as our dogs are\nto have us home (cats, not so much) we still have to go out occasionally for\ngroceries and other essentials. Such outings can potentially expose us to the\nvirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many pet owners want to\nknow if their pets are at risk of getting COVID-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does\nit Affect Pets?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The CDC has reported a small number of pets worldwide infected with the virus<\/a>, mainly after being in contact with a person with COVID-19. Currently, the risk of pets spreading the virus to people is low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the event their\nhumans are infected with the virus, guidelines suggest quarantining the pet\nseparately. The biggest risk to your pet is you falling ill and being unable to\ncare for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, if you\nsuspect you may have the novel coronavirus, experts suggest limiting your\ncontact with your dog or cat. That means no cuddling or petting until you\u2019re\nwell again. It\u2019s also a good idea to have a back-up plan in case you get sick\nand can\u2019t properly care for your pet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since many pet daycares are closed, a family member would be the preferable option, though pet sitters may still be taking clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How\nCan I Keep My Pets Safe?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best way to keep your pet safe from COVID-19<\/a> is to keep yourself safe. This means routinely washing your hands, keeping your house tidy and cleaning household items you use often regularly, maintaining a safe distance from other people and following all government mandates. Keeping your pet healthy with the best dog food should always be something you do, pandemic or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
