Our cats are part of the family, but not everyone knows how to make their lives great. There\u2019s a little more to it than just making sure your tabby<\/a> has some crunchies and a litter box. If you\u2019re trying to make sure your cat has a long, healthy, amazing life then you\u2019re in the right place. Read on for some great ideas on how to make that happen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Invest in Some Catnip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Catnip is one thing that many cats love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all cats, however, since some aren\u2019t\naffected by the plant. You should check with a smaller bag or toy before you\ndecide to get some more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they are affected? It\u2019s a great treat, good\nto introduce cats to new beds, and it can be put in or sprinkled on just about\neverything. Catnip just makes cats happy and there aren\u2019t any side effects\ndespite its strong effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your cat isn\u2019t affected, you\u2019ll have to find something else to motivate them, of course. Pheromone sprays are now available that keep cats calm and content, so purchasing a bottle of a good brand may be just what you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Have a Flea Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fleas are a pain. When a cat brings them into\nthe household, it can cause chaos. Everyone ends up getting bit, after all,\nsince fleas aren\u2019t exactly discriminatory with their blood-sucking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means you should have a plan in place for\nany cat which is allowed outdoors. Veterinarians can provide medication that\nrepel fleas but some people feel that these pharmaceutical compounds do more\nharm than good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If that\u2019s the case for you, then you\u2019ll want to have a plan ready anyways. Natural cures, like apple cider vinegar, should be used alongside mechanical methods of removing the fleas<\/a> and their eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A flea comb provides a good way to remove\nthem. They\u2019re a bit specialized, but they allow you to groom your cat while\nremoving any remaining fleas or eggs after they\u2019ve been treated for fleas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll need to take your furry friend to the vet on a regular basis. They\u2019ll be able to catch any problems that have cropped up, let you know if they\u2019re in good health, and generally aid your cat in living a long and storied life<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most veterinarians also have groomers on\nstaff. A good groomer is invaluable for those with long-haired cats,\nparticularly if you\u2019re looking at fierce summers in the region you live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While not as common as with dogs, some breeds\nalso suffer from genetic health problems. It\u2019s doubly important to bring any\npurebred feline to the veterinarian to have these issues monitored regularly\nfor the duration of the cat\u2019s lifespan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Keep Them Inside<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a lot of evidence that a cat that is\nkept indoors tends to live a longer life. And most felines don\u2019t seem to mind\nonce they\u2019ve been acclimated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a bit harder if you adopt an adult cat\nwho is used to being outdoors, but it\u2019s a wise idea to do so for a kitten. Many\nof the biggest killers of cats occur outdoors. Predatory animals, parasites,\nfleas, and even poisons abound\u2026 and your cat can get into them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll have to decide this for yourself but\nindoor cats tend to live for years<\/em>\nlonger than those which are allowed free access to the outdoors. Make them\npampered and cozy inside and you\u2019ll find that you have a content cat in your\nhome in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outdoor\ntime<\/a> can still be had, especially if the area is fenced in. Just make sure\nto supervise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Toy Variety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cats get bored easily and one of their\nfavorite things is toys. You should always have a variety on hand, just to mix\nthings up if your cat doesn\u2019t seem into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ball-type toys often let a cat entertain\nthemselves. There are also things like \u201cmice\u201d on a track that react when your\ncat engages with them. A good laser pointer is a way to pass hours with your\ncat and stick toys with feathers or plumes are always a favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you get to know your cat\u2019s particular\ntastes in toys, you\u2019ll be able to buy some great things for them. It\u2019ll be a\nlearning process for both of you, so take it slow and find the right\nentertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Engage With Them Daily<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cats are social animals,<\/a> despite their reputation as stand-off loners. It can be seen in any feral cat colony, where many cats coexist alongside each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to that simple fact, you\u2019ll need to make\nsure that your cat is engaged with daily and feels like part of the family.\nYou\u2019re their colony, after all, and that means you\u2019re responsible\nfor taking care of them<\/a> and continuing to engage on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be a bit of play, just picking them up\nand petting them for ten minutes, or lying in bed with them while you scroll\nthrough social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you don\u2019t interact in a friendly manner\nwith your cat regularly it can cause bad habits and stand-offish behavior. Your\nkitty is there for you when you need them, but you need to be there for them\ndaily!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
