How To Prepare Your Dog For Separation\nAnxiety <\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

After spending weeks or even months working from home, your pup has probably gotten used to getting some extra attention and love during the day. But with restrictions easing, you\u2019ll probably have to go back to the office, which leaves your pup to adjust to a new routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While you can\u2019t explain what\u2019s happening to your pup, there are steps you can take to help them adjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ease them into being alone <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To get your pup used to\nyou leaving the house again, grab your keys and head out the door. Let them\nhear that you\u2019re locking it and then wait 5 minutes. You may hear your dog\nwhine or even scratch at the door after you\u2019ve walked out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be heartbreaking,\nand your first instinct will be to open the door to reassure your pup. But you\nwant your dog to settle down on their own without waiting for you to\nreturn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gradually extend the\ntime you spend away after you\u2019ve locked up. Your pup will begin to realize that\nyou\u2019re not abandoning them and that you\u2019ll be back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get them something to chew <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some dogs will chew\nexcessively, scratch at the door or dig when they\u2019re stressed<\/a>. To help your pup settle down, you can get your\npooch a chew toy, which you can stuff with their favorite treat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will help keep them\nbusy and distracted while you’re away. The toy will also provide mental\nstimulation throughout the day while you\u2019re away at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Introduce your dog to this new toy before you go back to work. This way, you can make sure your dog is interested in the toy and encourage them to play with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create a \u201cscent item\u201d <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your dog may have a\ndaily sniff routine, which they use to identify any changes to their\nenvironment. It also helps to lower your dog\u2019s stress levels. You can use this\nto help decrease your pup\u2019s anxiety by leaving them something that smells like\nyou. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be an old\nshirt, a sweatshirt or even a blanket that has your scent on it. They\u2019ll sniff\nthis and may even lie on it, which will bring them comfort. You\u2019re going to\nhave to wear this item beforehand to make sure that it smells like you, as your\ndog will be able to tell if the scent is old. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave the item in your\ndog\u2019s bed or somewhere close by. It\u2019s a good idea to introduce your \u201cscent\nitem\u201d when doing your short 10-minute outings while getting your dog used to\nyou being gone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tire them out <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Exercise<\/a> is a\ngreat way to get your dog relaxed and tired out. If you get up early in the\nmorning, take your pup for a run before you go to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will help your dog get rid of some excess energy, make them happy and they\u2019ll probably want to drink water and nap when you get back. You\u2019ll be able to leave the house without any fuss as they recover.  If going for a walk in the morning is out of the question, vigorously play with your dog inside for about 15 minutes to wear them out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider taking them to doggie daycare <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re not comfortable with the idea of leaving your dog home alone all day, you could look at taking them to doggie daycare!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your dog would have to\nbe socialized and they\u2019d be able to make friends, which will keep them\ndistracted and happy. Find one that\u2019s on your route to work, which will help\nwith the daily commute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, get a pet sitter<\/a> so your dog can stay in his safe space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
