Living with a New Puppy in the City<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Raising a\npuppy in the city is much different than raising one in a suburban or rural\nsetting. For example, most dogs don\u2019t like to go to the bathroom on concrete\u2026\nit just goes against their nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact,\nhousetraining, in general, can be more challenging in the city, especially if\nyou don\u2019t live on the first floor with access to green space, and apartments\nlike that are hard to come by. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time you\u2019ve waited for the elevator, dashed through the lobby, and gotten to an appropriate potty space, you\u2019ve likely missed an opportunity. But the good news is, puppies are extremely adaptable and there\u2019s a solution for just about every issue. There\u2019s no question puppies are high maintenance, but we promise they\u2019re worth it! Let\u2019s jump right into our top tips for living with a new puppy in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider\nyour budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Being a responsible\npet parent<\/a> can be pricey and raising a puppy in the city comes with\nadditional expenses you\u2019ll need to consider. For example, your apartment may\nrequire an additional security deposit or a monthly pet fee, as well as an\nextra cleaning fee when you move out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t leave a puppy locked up in your apartment all day long while you work, so you\u2019ll also need to pay for a dog walker or doggie daycare<\/a>. And, of course, you\u2019ll have the typical expenses of puppy food, toys, baths and grooming, and cleaning supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health care\nis probably the greatest expense of owning a puppy, whether you live in the\ncity or the country. Consider\npurchasing a pet insurance policy<\/a> so that you\u2019re not blindsided with\na massive vet bill if your puppy becomes ill or injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plan\nto take a little time off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If\npossible, take some time off work when you bring your new puppy home. Or, at\nleast try to bring him home on a Friday so the two of you have all weekend to\nbond and begin the housetraining process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most\nimportantly, you should use this time to establish\na routine<\/a> that includes, potty time, meals, and playtime. Having regular\nfeeding times and regular potty breaks will help you and your new puppy get\npotty training down much more quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puppy\nproofing is a must<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Puppy\nproofing your apartment<\/a> is a must for keeping your new puppy and your\nvaluables safe. You\u2019ll still need to supervise your puppy anytime he\u2019s not in\nhis crate, but it will give you peace of mind to have things you don\u2019t want\nyour puppy to get a hold of out of reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
