1. Choose the right dog breed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dogs have a wide variety of temperaments, and\nyou\u2019ll need to make sure that yours is suited to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may be a mistake to adopt a younger pet.\nWhile cute, they have a lot of energy and often aren\u2019t as careful around people\nas we\u2019d like. Thousands of people are injured every year playing with their\npets, so a calmer animal is usually more appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While size is a preference for most people,\nkeep in mind that larger dogs cost double what smaller dogs do per year. That\nmay be an important consideration if you have a fixed income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Make care arrangements in advance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Medical problems can lead to long absences\nfrom your home, and they happen suddenly. Since seniors are at more risk of\nextended hospital stays, you should ensure that your dog will be taken care of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most often it\u2019s best to arrange with a family\nmember for the dog to be fed, watered, and generally cared for while you\u2019re\naway. That way a plan can be put in place as soon as you\u2019re not home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Schedule ahead for appointments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your appointments should be scheduled in\nadvance, especially routine\ncheckups with the veterinarian<\/a>. Groomer appointments are another regular\noccurrence that you\u2019ll need to take care of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your best bet is to schedule them well in\nadvance, especially since you\u2019ll have to work around other appointments. It\u2019s\njust a fact of life that as we get older our schedules become fuller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write them down in a planner, put them on your\ncalendar, and even set up your phone\u2019s calendar as well. Reminders are never a\nbad thing, and it\u2019s often difficult to recall appointments that were made\nmonths in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scheduling far ahead of time lets you keep your schedule flexible as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Automated feeding and watering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Go with automated feeders and watering\nfountains to save yourself some labor. There are many of them out there, and\nthey come in sizes suitable for all dogs. You even get automated feeders for\ncats, rabbits and fish too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the cheaper ones require more effort\nto keep up. Gravity-fed water bowls, for instance, still require you to fill up\nthe sizable container. It\u2019s a time-saver compared to regularly filling a dog\nbowl, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, you can also find setups\nthat allow for more freedom. It\u2019s really a matter of what you need to do to\nstay comfortable on a day-to-day basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The end result is always saved effort, so look\ninto the available systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Find the right veterinarian<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll need to find the right veterinarian to\nhelp with your dog\u2019s care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means getting along with them on a\npersonal basis, but you may have special requirements. One of the biggest\nrequirements which seniors have is needing house calls. Finding a veterinarian\namenable to doing so is often easy enough, you just need to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure that your veterinarian\u2019s office is\nclose by as well. In the event of an emergency, you don\u2019t want to have to drive\nfor hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A veterinarian makes a huge difference in\nquality-of-life for your dog. So pick the right one in the first place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Calculate the costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dogs are an investment<\/a>, and you\u2019ll be spending money on them. A small dog with no complications can often cost around $600 per year. Larger dogs are almost twice that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s assuming nothing else comes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t have a dog yet, you\u2019ll also need\nto take into account all of the trappings your animal needs. Food bowls, toys,\nand dog beds all add up quickly and are part of the whole package. You may need\nto dog-proof\nyour home<\/a> as well, even the type of couch can be an important\nconsideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just make sure that you\u2019ve got the financial backing you\u2019ll need, especially initially, and then plan it out from there. Emergencies happen, but you shouldn\u2019t have to worry about the day-to-day expenses of upkeep. A wise budget helps you plan ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
