• Quickly and carefully
SEARCH last known location (keep slip lead and stinky treats with you at all times) check your home, shed, garage, bat and the entire area by foot and then by car that the dog went Missing from...if you see the lost dog, be sure to get down low on ground, talk gently, limit eye contact and offer treats, keeping your slip lead and treats close...TELL EVERYONE you see the dog is Missing and give any instructions like DO NOT CHASE or any other tips about what the dog is like to get him to come to them...(for instance your dog is food or play driven, friendly or very skittish is important information) tell all your friends, neighbors (have them monitor their cameras), the mailman, local stores...the more eyes watching the better...
*SIGHTINGS Are Very Very Important be sure you give phone #!!!*
• REPORT TO ANIMAL CONTROL to file a Lost Report...check all local Shelters... Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (serves Hampton, Newport News and York County) check IN PERSON daily or at least every few days...
• Set a SCENT STATION...stinky dirty laundry, from the bottom of laundry basket, smelly dog bedding or used blanket and a bowl of smelly human or can dog food...(we use Fried Chicken with no bones, Burgers, Sausage, Rotisserie Chicken, Bacon, Bacon Grease, Gravy and Liquid Smoke) place in a safe and visible location at your house or at the location the dog went missing from to help dog find home or homebase...
• POST on all Lost & Found Pet pages on Facebook...Lost & Found Pets-Hampton Roads, VA, Nextdoor app, Neighbors app, Pawboost app and any other Neighborhood pages in your area...
**BE SURE TO...
•Use very detailed information in posts state Missing/Lost, Breed, Color, Size, When and Where dog went missing from (list the Closest intersecting streets and city) so we can hop in cars and GPS to come and help or to connect you to a found dog in your area), state if Collar and/or Microchip...
• If you or those who are helping you SEE your dog be sure they get low to the ground, stay calm with limited eye contact and slowly get the dog to approach them by using treats...a dog on the run may not even recognize his own owner if he is in Fight or Flight mode... if dog is fearful, it may take some time for him to realize that you are safe and you may end up needing to use a Humane Trap and Cameras to safely capture your dog...
• Please Contact me or someone else who has traps and cameras
• Be Patient and figure out what works to get the dog to trust you...
• If you see a Lost Dog PLEASE SAFELY CONTAIN, if at all possible until someone else can take over for you!!!
• Make FLIERS by next morning of dog missing...make flier simple by stating MISSING or LOST at top of page with only One BIG contrasting Picture of dog in the middle and Contact phone # on the bottom...Be Sure to put all fliers in upsidedown plastic page protectors sealed with tape and put in places where people slow down enough to glance, often people ONLY glance so they need to clearly see and remember your pet's picture and hopefully return to the flier to get phone # if they see your pet...
• Have any Vet records and pics of your pet available for posts and proof of ownership...if Found dog file a Found Report
• UPDATE MICROCHIP info with current contact information...
