Richie Kennedy people pick up dogs all the time and dump them when they can't sell them or the dog is hard to manage. That's why you will hear of animals found so far away from there homes in other towns or even states away. Report your dog missing to the shelter , any vets offices and on the nextdoor app and get flyers up. Notify the border collie rescue also.
