Require potential adopters to pay a reasonable rehoming fee. Ask them for veterinarian reference and home visit. This helps ensure that they will get needed vet care like spay/neuter and vaccinations. Getting to meet all others in family including other pets and to see how everyone feels about the additional responsibility of a new pet can assist finding the best home. These can be done even now with restrictions by using technology. It all helps deter bad people who would use them for bait in dog fighting rings.

NextDoor app is your best chance as covers your area. Be sure to check your local animal shelter in person (can’t stress enough - in person!!! You know your pet best plus shelter workers are busy and can’t keep up) every couple days. Follow your pets routine, as weird as it might sound, as this sometimes help. Put something out (bedding, towels, clothing, cat tower, etc) with your and/or pet’s smell. If this is a cat, they usually do not travel far. Will find a tiny tight space to crouch in (inside or outside your home) and will freeze and stare. Check with a flashlight (especially at night as dark) as it will capture the glow in their eyes.
