Sharing these tips for finding missing cats from another group I belong to. I really hope you find Jack. ”TIPS FOR FINDING MISSING CATS SEARCH ON FOOT: --HIDING PLACES: Cats often hide obsessively when something has frightened them. Check garages, sheds, under houses, bushes, brush piles, and around vacant buildings. --NEIGHBORS Talk with or email your neighbors check their sheds etc. for hiding cat -AFTER DARK Using a flashlight and searching after dark gives you the advantage that their eyes glow making them easier to see. --DON'T FORGET TO LOOK UP. Check trees and rooftops. --TRAPPED IN ENCLOSURE? Could your pet be trapped? Have any neighbors recently moved, gone on vacation, or renovating their house? Your pet may have been inadvertently locked in a moving van, delivery truck, or the garage of a vacationing neighbor. It is also possible that home construction or renovations might have sealed off part of neighbor's property the day your animal disappeared If you live in an area with a lot of feral cats, make sure you look where other cats are found. Your kitty may have integrated into an existing colony of stray/feral cats. HUMANE TRAPS: Set up a humane trap with some tuna and other smelly cat food and with your clothes both on and in trap. Put flour on the ground around the trap so that you can tell from the paw prints if you cat has come and if so, where it went. Often local vets or the shelter will lend you a humane trap if you need one. ATTRACTING WITH SCENT: -Litter box. One of the most effective methods to attract your cat is to put your cat's litter box outside where you can monitor it near the humane trap. If your cat is lost because something spooked him he might be disoriented and unable to find his way home. They can smell their litter box at quite a distance. -Walk around with a plate of smelly tuna and call for your cat. Listen carefully. If you do not hear/find your cat, that doesn't mean she's not there -- she may just be afraid. Continue this at morning, midday, evening and late evening. Most cats return home between 3 AM and 5 AM. -If you leave out food and water for your cat overnight be sure to leave it somewhere that the predators cannot get to like under your car or leave a window open with a 2 by 4 leading up to it for your cat to climb. If you put flour on the ground around the food then you will be able to tell by the paw prints whether your cat came and if so in which direction your cat went. -Leave the cat bed or some blankets or clothing, preferably socks, that already have your scent on them outside or on patio furniture SITTING OUTSIDE In addition to doing a complete search on foot, try simply sitting. Spend a few evenings outside NOT looking and your kitty may come to you. The act of looking may appear aggressive to a frightened cat. Even if your pet may not be brave enough to get right up close to you, being able to finally see a pet gives owners the confidence that their animal is INDEED nearby and they are using the proper techniques. Here's what you'll need: • Plate of cat's favorite meal. • Blanket sprayed with Feliway and a good book. Pick a spot that is near possible hiding places, yet open enough so kitty won't feel cornered. Spread out blanket sprayed with Feliway and place the plate of food on the blanket but not right next to you. Place a trail of food leading to the plate. Under NO circumstances do you stand up and chase. If kitty comes to you, try to gauge the sense of comfort and see how close you can get. If at any time your cat backs off, you must also back off and freeze. If you don't think your pet will be calm enough to pick up and you decide to grab it, you must make that decision WITHOUT WAVERING! You cannot change your mind midstream. Once you grab your pet, you gotta hang on. Bring a pet carrier if your cat is not afraid of it and if you think you can get your cat into it. MICRO CHIPPED? If your cat is microchipped, call the shelter and the company s/he is registered with and report him/her as missing. They often offer tools to help recover your cat. If you have lost the microchip company contact info, check with the vet who microchipped him/her for you. FLYERS If it is raining put your flyer in a ziploc bag. Make a flyer with: --Photo– if no photo detailed description cat’s COLOR/S (brown-black, tabby-striped, 2-color, 3 colors mottled,…), longhaired or shorthaired, any distinguishing characteristics. --Location - where the cat was last seen --When last seen --Your phone/email and if texting is ok, and if it is ok to call late at night --Reward if applicable - PLACES TO POST FLYERS: ---Stop signs are best, because people in cars can see them – be sure to post on the side of the stop sign that is facing the cars (usually the side of the signpost so the drivers who are stopped at the stop sign can read it). Best at roads that lead to/from your subdivision. ---Hang on neighbors’ front door knobs or mail boxes ---On the front of your mail box – address it to your postman – s/he travels all through your neighborhood and might see something ---All Local veterinarians - When people find lost cats they usual take them to the local vet to check if s/he is microchipped so it is good to check back so that people in the clinic know you are still looking. Give them a flyer to post. ---Responses to flyers - If someone responds to your flyer, having possibly found your animal, check it out even if it seems too far away to possibly be your animal. Animals have been found miles from where they were originally lost. Cats have been known to jump in postal or UPS or FedEx trucks and ending up far from home. CHECK ANIMAL SHELTERS EVERY 2-3 DAYS - unclaimed pets can be adopted out after a week and they will not give the original owner the contact info for the new owner. It can be confusing because the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter is nearby the Santa Cruz SPCA - CHECK BOTH, FREQUENTLY: Santa Cruz SPCA on Chanticleer 2601 Chanticleer Ave, Santa Cruz, CA https://spcasc. .org 831-465-5000 Santa Cruz COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER on Rodriguez and 7th 1001 Rodriguez St, Santa Cruz, CA http://www.scanimalshelter. .org 831-454-7200 --File a missing cat report: --Keep checking back - even if you have filled out a report - go in person to the shelters lots of times an animal may have just been brought in, and not everyone is aware this pet is there. --Keep checking back every other day, especially if it is not a no-kill shelter. POST ONLINE: Post on as many websites as possible and check their lost and found listings every day: -NextDoor . com -Facebook: local town/city/neighborhood groups and pets & lost pets groups in your area. -Craigslist: https: //sfbay.craigslist.org/search/scz/laf -Petfinder . com (under classifieds, Lost) GOOD LUCK!”
