Message from Owner

My husband and I are beyond gutted. We have been searching endlessly for days for our beloved tortoise and have yet to find her. She is 6" long x 4.5" wide. She is incredibly hardy, and we know she is still out there. We need your help locating her and bringing her ! Please look around your yard! She is a land-only tortoise and CANNOT SWIM. She will be basking in the sun in the early morning/afternoon, otherwise she will be hiding under bushes/shrubs or other low structures (decks/sheds/rock formations), or in plants, leaves, or pine needle piles. She loves to dig and burrowing can happen, especially when the weather has been very cool or it’s time for bed (around 4 pm). Look for loose soil and other clues of disturbance. She tends to burrow out a little half cave for herself (see the picture of her in the pine needles) and very rarely will be fully covered, but it’s not impossible. Even in that case, you will still see loose soil as a hint.

Julia Messier I’m on 62 Pine Colony, & I keep thinking we are going to find her. My son has been a wildlife fan since he could walk. (We used to rescue “squirms” from puddles on the pavement.) My barn cats have brought a baby chipmunk inside and a frog in the yard to play with… but no sign of your tortoise. We are still looking and hopeful, though. Should we neighbors put out any kind of food to help?

Kevin Cook she can go pretty far if she’s motivated! We’ve heard stories of missing tortoises like her that were found anywhere from 1 mile to 10 miles from home! That’s why we’re trying to spread the word to as many people as possible. Please keep an eye out!

Keith Bruning this is Tillie’s mom. I understand your comment may have been meant lightheartedly, but I want to clarify that she is a domesticated pet who has lived her whole life in human care, and her species is not native to NH. Without the proper food, warmth, and shelter, she is at serious risk. We are beyond heartbroken and doing everything we can to bring her home where she will be safe and cared for.
