Cats usually don't go far from home on their own. Go out after dark/dusk with flashlight looking under cars, bushes, wooded areas, under decks, porches, stairways, stored objects looking for reflection of their eyes. Also walk shaking her favorite bag of treats, calling her. Put something of yours heavy with your scent (dirty clothes, pillow case, blanket etc) outside. If you have something you can tear into pieces and make a trail back home would also work. Post signs asking neighbors for possible sightings. Can also make a trail of smelly food ( mackeral/tuna mixed with water & brine) toward your house or put out food and fresh water hoping she will come home when she is hungry. Do NOT put out litter. Many suggest this but this can tempt other animals to use or mark as their own which will keep your baby away. Cats have a much higher threshold than other animals. They can stay hidden for days even weeks before reaching their threshold. Most times, an owner gives up before the cat ever reaches their threshold to come out. You physically going and searching helps get your scent out and can help your cat reach their threshold sooner. Your scent = safety to your cat. Please, DON’T give up. Animals will circle back to point of escape/accident looking for their owner. SCENT- Put something heavy with your scent in that location, out of the way of danger as quiet a spot/hidden as possible. Use very dirty laundry (socks, used sheets, pillowcases, unwashed favorite sweater/jacket or throw). Refresh scent items every few days or after rain. FOOD/WATER- Make feed station with fresh water & yummy food (kibble mixed with fried chicken shredded off bone, hot dog, or hamburger). Spray area with liquid smoke. Refresh feed station twice a day. Go back to the site getting scent out by sitting in area quietly on phone or talking/singing softly. SIGNS- Signs are THE #1 way pets get home. Signs should say: MISSING, include picture, and contact number. Place sign in plastic sheet protector or gallon size ziplock bags, open side down (keeps rain out) and tape well, especially bottom. Tape signs to EVERY stop sign/ intersection, & lamp post in a 2-5 mile radius of home and where they went missing. At LEAST 100‐300 posters. TIME IS CRITICAL!!! **Can’t stress enough the importance of signs!! Signs are THE #1 way pets get home.*** HELP- Find help from PROFESSIONAL REPUTABLE groups. Look on @Missing Animal Response Network under your state for groups who can help.
