They hide close to home but will come out at night in search of food. Put out water and their bed for scent. I did put out food but what brought mine back was canned sardines in water! It’s smelly! And you have to WATCH for them as unlike dogs who will bark, cats are quiet and if he’s scared he’ll run away to hide with any noise. You have to stay up, leave your door open and watch for them (amd it may be in the middle of the night!). I cut pieces of canned sardines in water up which brought my cat back.
