If your cat is an indoor cat, it will be scared and won’t come when called. Try placing their used litter outside. At night, use a flashlight to check under your and your neighbors' bushes and decks for the reflection of your cat's eyes. Additionally, consider setting up a humane trap as soon as possible, as it's one of the most effective methods for finding lost cats. You can bait the trap with strong-smelling sardines. These traps can be purchased at local hardware stores or borrowed from animal shelters. While this approach might seem drastic, remember that lost pets often enter survival mode and behave differently. Be sure to research how to use a humane trap effectively. Make sure to visit local animal shelters in person and look for your missing kitty, and post flyers within a one-mile radius of where your kitty went missing. There are also many valuable resources available online if you search for "how to find your missing cat." Important Note: Be cautious of sc@mmers who may claim they have found your cat or offer dr0ne services. It's best not to engage with them.

Be proactive. Cats that escape from indoors will most likely stay close by. They will go into hiding but come out at nighttime. Go out when it’s dark, or early morning around 5 am , use a flashlight and call out by name, look in bushes, under cars etc. Talk to your neighbors and get the flyers out , they are really helpful for those who won’t see your posts on the internet. Put out some clothing to attract the cat’s smell, if possible set up a Wi-Fi camera to monitor and if the cat comes- set a trap. The cat will try to find a food source so try setting up a food station and monitor. Report to your local police and if the cat is microchipped, make sure the info is up to date. I would also email or call shelters in case animal control picks it up. Check their websites daily as new cats come in all the time.

Notify non-emergency police, animal control and the postal carriers in the area lost. Check with neighbors or businesses nearby that may have cameras. Put a neon sign in your yard. Fill out lost reports with both Lost Dogs/Cats Illinois website www.petfbi.org and Pawboost website (choose not to pay for ads and it’s free!) They will generate a flyer for you to print. Post in lost animal sites and community sites on FB. Put up flyers at nearby stores/gas stations, pet stores, libraries, and give some to pizza delivery places to put on their boxes. Put the outside flyers in a gallon sized freezer bag to protect from the elements. You can also try bus companies to put a flyer on their buses. Let the kids in the area know as they notice everything when not on their phones. Put food and water out and something with your scent. Check in nearby garages, sheds, window wells, ponds, look under decks. Also check with shelters in person or call as many as you can and give them a flyer. If the animal is chipped notify the company and make sure your contact info is correct. Also let vet and groomers in the area know. Can see if anyone has a drone to help search especially if woods nearby. Please also be aware of scammers. Especially if you are giving a reward. Do not give them a code or anything they ask. Tell them you will give them the reward at the police station for both of your safety. 🙏🏻 for a reunion soon! Don’t give up hope!
