An escaped indoor cat will be scared and will want to get back inside. Typically, they do this at night in the safety of darkness. Right away, before it leaves to find food, crack open the door/window it escaped from to allow it back in. If it escaped from a window, put a box under the opened window to make it easier to get back in. Turn off porch and foyer lights and contain pets in another room. It might take all night for it to come back inside. Do not put food out because you want it to come inside for food. You can try sitting outside and jiggling its dish with food in it and calmly call it to come and eat, as you would normally do. Wait and listen for a meow. It might be afraid of you. Do not chase or follow it because you want it to stay by the house. Knock on nearby doors and post laminated, readable LOST fliers with pic and phone number and "Do Not Chase" on STOP signs.
