Searching is key Follow tips and searching at dark is key and don't leave any litter or food out as its coyote season Make sure to be searching and having neighbor's check garages as many get trapped, post on nextdoor app, hang flyers asap, file a lost report at the shelter and deceased lists as sadly it's coyote season. Also do not leave any food or litter out as it will attract wildlife and keep your cat away. If indoor they stay close by and hide Cats you have to actively search for by walking the area physically looking in spaces, bushes and checking neighbor's garages/sheds for a 10 house radius. Do not call the cats name when searching as when scared or in hiding mode they will not come when called, make a sound or even move. Ask neighbors, search late night and early morning when they roam using a flashlight as the eyes will glow with cats, hang flyers asap in a 2 mile radius with a pic and visible contact number, check shelter/ deceased lists daily and file a lost report. Post on Craigslist and nextdoor.com, if chipped calling the microchip company and flag as lost. The complete list is below. Follow these tips: The first 24-48 hours since your cat went missing are the most important time to do all of the following! It will better your chances of finding your cat! Please DO NOT WAIT FOR YOUR CAT TO COME HOME ON THEIR OWN, you must actively search for your cat.•First be sure to thoroughly check your own home in/out. Behind washer/dryer, every room, under beds, bed box spring, recliner chairs, attics, sheds, cars, closets, in garages, bushes in the back and front yards, on the roof, Rv's, etc. •DO NOT LEAVE LITTER BOX, FOOD OR WATER OUTas you do not want to attract any unwanted wildlife. DO go outside and shake a bag of food and/or open a can of wet food so they hopefully hear that familiar sound. Call their name repeatedly in a way they are familiar so hopefully they will come out of hiding and come to you or will meow in response and do that each time you are outside. A panicked indoor only cat will typically follow along the sides of the house, rather than risk slinking or bolting out into the open. However, this depends on what happens the moment that cat escapes — if the mail man is walking up the sidewalk the cat could bolt and run directly across the street for example. Check all your neighbors front yards and utilize a flashlight at night. •Put up flyers in and around the neighborhood with a very large clear photo that takes up most of the page, that way it is visible to passing cars. Large and bold font with the words 'MISSING CAT' 'REWARD' and a 'TELEPHONE NUMBER' is all that's needed. Please note: if you have an exotic cat or hybrid cat, i.e, Bengal, Savannah or Persian; do not identify this on your poster. Really secure it to poles with duck/packing tape. Use clear sleeves to protect it from rain. Putting up fluorescent posters works well too to catch people's attention. Post to local pet stores and vets offices as well. Check daily for found flyers and ads!! We ask finders of cats to do these same things. •Knock on every door in a 20 house radius, (cats typically do not stray far). Ask them to check the front, back and side to side of their home. Give them a flyer, ask them IF YOU CAN check their garages, sheds, backyards etc. for peace of mind. Look up on roofs & in trees too. (we once had a cat on the page found 7 days later locked in a shed, luckily he made it). Use a flash light whether it is day/night. No crevice is too small. Cats are most active at dawn/dusk. •Leave a door or window open 5" in case your cat tries to get in. Just secure your other pets until you find your cat. Leave their bed/blanket/piece of your clothing out too for scent to attract them. •If your cat is indoor only or if you spot your cat but it won't let you capture them, you can set up a humane trap in the area where s/he escaped from. example: under a window, back door etc, by putting in stinky wet cat food/or a oil tuna can & doing this every night and/or day. Please contact us to borrow a trap and for more detailed information. Local area only. •In case something bad happened (like a coyote, other predator, hit by car etc) check for evidence of hair/blood and check hide spots/bushes, crawl spaces, under decks/vehicles, spa's etc. thoroughly in case your cat is injured or deceased. Remember, if injured they typically will not make a sound as they are in fear. Coyotes will usually carry their prey a distance away to a secluded area like a wash, field etc. where they feel hidden. They can hop a 6-8ft fence no problem. When visiting the shelter ask to check their deceased list and ask every week. •Take a flyer to the Simi animal shelter (They are open 7 days a week, 12-6pm 670 W. Los Angeles Ave.) and any other local shelters as some people take them out of the area. Formally fill out a lost form, check cages, ask to check medical intake and check their deceased list, provide them
