Your care is definitely helping him and should continue. We care for 8 here. He’s a longhaired cat and feral cats build up a heavier coat plus put on weight to keep themselves warmer in the winter. Sometimes with the long hair it can get a bit matted. When they start to shed their winter coat they get rid of those mats as well. They will also pull those mats out themselves sometimes. It is quite possible he is socialized to an extent and could also have been brushed. I can brush several of ours. They like it....until they’ve had enough and walk away. That’s like any cat lol

Kimberly is right. You may have a neighbor close by that’s feeding and caring for him. He just seems to like you/your hard and is liking to hang out. Keep an eye and make sure he’s nit going hungry, sometimes the caregiver has moved and the cats wander to find food.

Yes. It is nice to know. Thanks to the FC rescue groups!! Do they brush and clean them up, too? He used to look dirty w dread locks. Now he looks like he’s been given an extreme makeover since I saw him a week ago. I was thinking his coat is shiny bc I’ve been feeding him.

Is the top of that ear cut off? If it is, that is a cat that has been trapped, neutered, given shots and then returned to the area it was found. I live in Fairfax County and that is being done by some "rescue" groups here.
