Message from Owner

Hi everyone, I’m asking for your help. My cat Arturo is missing from Ihea Street in Pukalani. He is a very friendly indoor/outdoor cat. He usually only goes outside for a couple of hours and always comes back , but this is the first time he hasn’t returned. He is white and gray, very furry and chunky. We are heartbroken and miss him very much. If anyone has seen him or has any information, please let me know. Any help would mean a lot. Thank you so much.

Did you click the more button at the bottom. Much of this is ongoing. The door open just 4” or so overnight is extremely successful.

Your house cat won’t go far. Even in a new place for the first few days to a week or more. 1. Make a lost pet report to MHS. PLEASE include photos 2. Put posters up. Keep it simple. Lost loved cat (photo) If seen call (your phone and another back up phone number) Also put flyers on doors or at mailboxes within 5 blocks. 3. Talk to your neighbors. Help them understand how special kitty is to you and you would appreciate any help. Make sure you give your contact info. Get their names, it makes it more personal. Look for traps and outdoor feeding stations. This may be indications of friendly folks who trap, neuter, release who are most likely to notice a new cat or people who may be trapping and dumping. If you suspect they may be trapping and dumping avoid being confrontational. Let them know you just want your kitty back. 4. Especially if kitty is indoor only, start trapping and leaving an open door overnight asap. See details below. Indoor cats will stay very nearby (within 100-150 feet at first) for several days and up to a week or two. This is the time to get ! home. 5. Go out with a bright flashlight at night after things quiet down in your area usually after 10 or 11pm or very early like 3-5 am and look in every concealed small space around your house within about 150 feet. The light will make cats’ eyes glow, easier to find. Keep in mind that cats can fit in very tight spaces under sheds, burrowed deep in plants, inside car/truck engines, on roofs, up trees, in spaces between buildings, behind washers and dryers etc. Ask neighbors in adjacent houses to check sheds, garages, inside vehicles, etc as well. If your kitty responds to shaken treats do that a little. Speak softly and welcoming, gently calling your pets name. 6. Make a post to local cat groups on Facebook, on Nextdoor, etc 7. Follow tips below as well. •leave a door or window near the indoor litter box or near favorite person’s dirty clothes open at night for kitty to return. (This really works - just make sure it is open only wide enough for kitty and do NOT wait for kitty to come in. Use a super secure door stop or large piece of furniture to prevent intruders from further opening the door. Do NOT stay just inside the door or there watching as. Cats want to slink in overnight when all is quiet including you without being seen. Kitty will come in and hide indoors where it is safe like under a bed, in a closet, on your bed and won’t go back out. •You can buy traps at Del’s Farm Supply, rent them from Maui Humane Society, or may be able to borrow one from a member of Maui Cat Coalition on Facebook or Dennis with Valley Isle Animal Rescue. •Set a trap out around dusk. •Put it on level ground under a bush or deck right along your house. If an outside feeder put it where you fed. •Bait with favorite stinky wet food or Tuna. Drizzle the juice from the can from a few feet away to the food in the cage. •Put a towel over the trap that covers all but the entrance and the rear where the food is inside. Maybe even one of your used bath towels as the scent will be familiar. •Make sure it does not interfere with the door mechanism. Make sure the trap is set, take safety off before putting towel on. •Make sure the towel is tucked or weighted at the edges so it won’t blow off or move with wind. •Put sweaty clothing from the kitties favorite human(s) outside in the area of the trap. •Leave the trap alone. If trap is concealed safely on your property, check it only from a distance with a flashlight briefly. Resist the urge to walk up to it or check it too frequently. Your cat will check it several times and often will not go in til 3 or 4 in the morning. If you are checking it kitty will not go in. (If you are trapping away from home you will need to be concealed nearby to watch and retrieve trap as soon as a cat is caught for cat’s safety.) •If you catch your cat, immediately cover the entire trap with the towel. Do NOT release your cat until securely in your home. •If you do not catch your cat or catch another cat the first time don’t get discouraged.Reset and try again. Trapping is not cruel. It is the safest way to get kitty home before kitty is hurt or moves on out of fear and instinct. Good luck.
