Frequently Asked Questions
I Found a Stray Animal. What Do I Do?
If you’ve found a stray pet, there are several steps to take to ensure you and the animal are both safe.
- Assess the situation — Before approaching the animal, assess the situation. If the pet is injured, sick, aggressive or otherwise not in a friendly mood, it might be best to contact professionals to help you safely capture the animal.
- Safely capture the animal — If the situation seems safe, you can attempt to get the animal to come to you. It’s best to have a cage for smaller animals like birds or cats. Trained dogs may be able to be leashed.
- Check for identifying information — Animals may have a collar with contact information. Make sure to check this first to see if there is an owner to call.
- Call a local vet or shelter — If they are safely captured, you can bring the pet to a local veterinarian to see if they are microchipped. You can call ahead to see if they have already been reported to a lost & found database.
- Post the found pet — If you bring the pet home, you can use PawBoost to make a found pet listing.
- Next steps — In the best-case scenario, you will be able to find a way to reunite the pet with its family. If not, you can consider keeping or rehoming the stray. Remember to check your local and state laws about pet ownership. If you decide not to keep the animal, you can take it to your local human society to help give it the best chance of finding a new home.
