Frequently Asked Questions
I Found a Stray Dog. What Do I Do?
If you’ve found a stray dog, there are several steps to take to ensure the safety of both you and the dog. These steps include:
- Safely catch the dog — If the dog seems in good health and doesn’t seem aggressive, attempt to get the dog to come to you. See if they will come with you to safety (your home) or use a leash if they have a collar. If they’re friendly and have a tag on the collar, take a picture of it in case they run away. If the situation is unsafe, call a local animal shelter or animal control.
- Check the collar — If you choose to bring the dog home, check the collar once you have them somewhere safe. If it has contact information, this will likely be the best way to reunite the dog with its owner.
- Call a local vet or shelter — If the dog has no information on its collar, call a local vet or shelter to see if the dog has been reported missing. They can also scan the pet for a microchip.
- Post the found dog — You can use PawBoost to easily make a listing for a found dog.
- Next steps — Hopefully, you can reunite the dog with its owner. If not, you may consider keeping or rehoming the dog, but ensure you check local and state laws about pet ownership. Finally, if you don’t wish to keep the dog, consider taking it to a humane society to give it the best chance of finding a home.
Where Do I Post a Found Dog?
The best place to post a found dog is on PawBoost! PawBoost will make a listing for the dog that gets pushed to our Facebook pages, our lost & found database, our email lists and more. It can also be helpful to post flyers around town, which you can also make using PawBoost.
I Found a Lost Dog. Who Do I Call?
Ideally, you can call the number that is on the collar of the dog. If this isn’t available, the next step is to call a local shelter or vet to see if someone reported their dog missing. If the dog seems hurt or dangerous, make sure to call animal control first. You can also search the PawBoost database for the dog’s description to see if the owner has made a ‘lost dog’ listing.
Does PawBoost Work With Shelters to Reunite Missing Dogs?
Yes! PawBoost partners with shelters and humane societies to help reunite missing dogs with their families. Strays picked up by our partner shelters are automatically added to our database. Fill out an application if you’re interested in becoming a partner.
