Please don’t give up and buy a live trap today—- it’s the safest most successful way to retrieve your cat—- plus SIMPLE, “easy to read from a passing car” signage. Use cheap For Sale signs with metal stakes and cover with printed poster and then clear plastic to weather-proof it. Best at busy intersections. 😻I’m sharing a list compiled from my own and others’ tips. Best wishes! Here are a few things you can try. Cats usually don’t go far. They just hide well. Cats are very active at dusk and dawn. So first of all you can go out and call for him. You can put his food/water, and lots of cat nip outside your house to help draw him back. Don’t let concern be in your voice but speak gently and carry open can of tuna. If you see him, set down tuna to lure him, but you may not be able to grab him. Rather than scare him, gently get the live trap immediately to his location, place food into it and step back for him to enter. Best if it’s covered with family worn Tshirt or towels for scent. Leave back of trap free of fabric to give appearance of an exit. Put your cat's bedding that has your cat's scent on it outside to attract your cat back to your home. Also putting your own unwashed clothes or bedding out. Cats run on scent and this is highly effective in luring your cat back home , as it's a comfortable and familiar smell. Lost felines can wander for as much as 9 miles, and this in a city, in my experience. Check garages, especially under porches and decks, dense bushes, etc. Also leave your garage door up enough for them to get under. Get one of those strong flashlights they will catch a cat's reflective eyes two blocks away and save you tons of time!!! Do not leave the food out overnight as it will attract other animals that can scare the kitty away. Go to your neighbors and let them know your kitty got out and give them your contact info. Walk your neighborhood and talk to people as you can. Take a flyer TO your local vets office and shelter a face is better than a thousand words of description and check every couple of days in person if possible BIG NEON POSTERS at intersections. Keep them simple: the Cats face + Lost + your phone number. Actually go to the shelter and check. Sometimes it can take weeks or months to find your kitty. Many times cats are found within a couple hundred feet of their homes. Post fliers around your neighborhood with your phone number that people can call day or night. And talk to your mail carrier. They see lots of animals. If they see a strange kitty around, they may recognize it as yours. Make sure you call local animal shelters, etc If you know anyone in the area that feeds and shelters strays, check in with them. A lost pet will be looking for a food source. Borrow , Rent or Buy a humane trap ASAP! This is the best chance at retrieving your cat. Cover the trap with a tarp or blanket. The ONLY food you leave out should be in that trap. During severe or harsh weather trap should be checked every 20- 30 minutes . Do not leave the trap set for long periods of time unattended, especially overnight. Set trap at dawn, close trap at dusk. In freezing temperatures, you must check it every 30 minutes or even more often. The most importantly do not give up hope! I’ve seen them found after 13 months. Also… post his pic as Lost on petcolove dot org. They scan for similar found cats on Nextdoor and Neighbors and will present his image to someone who may find him and search on there. It worked when I found a cat and was then able to return her to her owner.
