Escaped and is very skittish. May come to her name. Does respond to a pop top can of food. Please don't chase. Contact me if seen. I am heartbroken. I was in hosp when she got out.

Most likely, you’re dealing with the same situation many indoor cats face when they escape. Two major factors are working against him right now. 1) He’s outside his territory. Indoor cats that suddenly find themselves outside usually switch into instinctive fight-or-flight mode, and most choose flight. That means they immediately hide and stay concealed. It’s very common for them to tuck under decks, inside bushes, in window wells, or anywhere that feels safe and hidden. 2) Food and water will eventually force movement. At first, he will stay hidden for long periods. But once hunger and thirst set in, he will have to move. Most cats begin moving late in the evening—usually after 8–9 PM—when it’s dark and quiet. That’s when they feel safest. A couple things that can significantly increase your chances of getting him back: 1) Set up an outdoor camera. A trail camera or a Wi-Fi camera like an Arlo can confirm if he’s returning to the area. Knowing when he’s showing up removes a lot of guesswork. 2) Use a live trap. A trap can save days of trying to perfectly time when he might appear. Once he gets comfortable approaching the bait, the trap does the work for you. Bait matters. If you’re using a trap, stick with strong-smelling fish. Two of the best options you can easily find at local stores are: Sardines (in oil, not water) Mackerel Mackerel works especially well because it usually has a lot of juice. You can use that liquid to create a small scent trail leading to the trap. It may sound a little elaborate, but this approach works because it taps directly into a hungry cat’s instincts. When food becomes the motivation, they’re far more likely to approach—and that’s often what leads them back home. -- I hope this is helpful and good luck.
