Tips for finding your lost kitty I'm sure he/she is hiding nearby or could have been accidentally locked in a neighbor's garage - talk to all neighbors in a several block radius. Posters are helpful and do notify police and animal shelters.. Most importantly, I would get a chair, a bowl of her/his favorite food or tuna, a used poopbox for scent, and stay outside your door in that chair tonight and every night until he/she comes home. You must monitor the poopbox! The scent of poopboxes attracts predators like wild dogs and coyotes and most experts suggest caution. In my advice post I specify that you must remain outside to monitor the poopbox. Animals can smell these a mile away and the last thing you want is to lure your kitty into a coyote ambush. Here’s a recent joyous post discussing a lost kitty who was found: "Thank you all for help in finding Patty! She was found by kind neighbors a street over. She was stuck in a tree. Patty is getting all the love, dinner, fresh water, and all the attention.” Thank you Patty for reminding us to look in all possible places including high trees and utility poles especially at night. Kitties can climb up a tree or pole to escape from a predator often in the middle of the night when they are active. And here’s another story that might be helpful about beautiful Ella of Parma Heights in Ohio. Here’s what her CatMom Carolyn told us: We noticed our cat Ella was missing about 8 a.m. We searched the entire house, and surrounding property and walked around our neighbors homes. Posted pictures of her and talked to neighbors. Then after canvassing the neighborhood, we heard Ella meowing in a bedroom around 8 that evening. Ella was in a dresser drawer! Picture a mostly black cat on top of black exercise clothes. She was accidentally shut in by her CatMom early that morning. She will now be wearing a neon colored collar. Thank you beautiful Ella! Your traumatic experience in the drawer may very well now rescue other kitties with a fondness for soft people clothes. Thank you! <3 And the we read this from Shayna in the Akron area: WE FOUND NALA!!! Thank the Lord!! Turns out she was in our basement walls this whole time. I was downstairs playing with the kids and heard scratching on the walls. There’s a small hole in our ceiling but what we didn’t know is there’s a little gap that she must have fallen through. We had to bust open a wall but thank goodness we found her. She’s doing well. She’s been eating, drinking and asking for all the snuggles. <3 Back to the task at hand - Yes, I know it’s cold tonight but so is it cold for your baby – just bring blankets and a warm hat. Cats hide during the day but will come out late at night when they feel its safe. You need to be there when she/he comes back because he/she will not hang around and wait for you. Be patient and call her/him by name often. This will require some work and inconvenience but it will be well worth the effort.

Here are a few things you can try. Cats usually don’t go far. They just hide well. Cats are very active at dusk and dawn. So first of all you can go out and call for him. You can put his food/water, and lots of cat nip outside your house to help draw him back. Also, put your cat's bedding that has your cat's scent on it outside to attract your cat back to your home. Also putting your own unwashed clothes or bedding out . Cats run on scent and this is highly effective in luring your cat back home .PetMD backs this up, can help lure the cat back home, as it's a comfortable and familiar smell. Shake the treat/food container outside. Check garages, especially under porches and decks,dense bushes, etc. Get one of those strong flashlights they will catch a cat's reflective eyes two blocks away and save you tons of time!!! Do not leave the food out overnight as it will attract other animals that can scare the kitty away. Go to your neighbors and let them know your kitty got out and give them your contact info. Walk your neighborhood and talk to people as you can. Take a flyer TO your local vets office and shelter a face is better than a thousand words of description and check every couple of days in person if possible Sometimes it can take weeks or months to find your kitty. Also post with Pawboost and Sam the Parrot about your missing cat. Many times cats are found within a couple hundred feet of their homes. Post fliers around your neighborhood with your phone number that people can call day or night. And talk to your mail carrier. They see lots of animals. If they see a strange kitty around, they may recognize it as yours. Make sure you call local animal shelters, etc Best time to look is between 1-6AM Get a humane trap ASAP! This it's the best chance at retrieving your cat. Line it with newspaper. The ONLY food you leave out should be in that trap. Do not leave the trap set for long periods of time unattended, especially overnight. The most importantly do not give up hope! Open your garage door a little. Don’t put the litter box out. 🙏🏻Also take a flashlight out at night and look in and under things to see if you can see the kitty’s eyes.

Sit something out with your scent (dirty laundry or bedding) or your cat’s scent by the area it escaped from and check frequently. There are controversies on the litter box being placed outside. Most professionals say don’t set the litter box outside, as it draws in stray and ferals in that neighborhood because they are territorial and if your cat comes out they could chase your cat away. They do not like new cats in their territory. If possible, leave a window/door open, or crack the garage door (especially overnight) to allow it to come in. Set out strong smelling wet cat food (sardines in water work great) but be careful doing this overnight, as it may attract other animals…you’ll need to check frequently for your pet’s presence. Post neon posters of your cat’s picture and your phone number to telephone poles at intersections/locations of where he was lost. Sardines in water is a great choice of food to leave out, as the smell of sardines is pungent and can be smelled from a far distance. Cats love them. Best time to look would be from dusk to dawn, the cat is going to be scared. If it’s an indoor only cat, they are usually very close or a few houses away…they're going to wait until it's quiet to move about, they might not even meow, so take a flashlight out to look for glowing eyes and use a CALM VOICE (they will pick up tension/ panic in your voice). Whatever you do at home to get them to come to you, do that outside. Check under sheds, decks, bushes, rooftops and trees…ask neighbors to check their security cameras, sheds, garages, and/or ask for permission to check their property. Indoor cats will most likely be on your property or two houses away. If you have other pets, a dog may be able to sniff out the cat…and if you have another cat, put that cat in the carrier then take it outside and sit the carrier on a step/porch while you walk around your property. Rent or buy a humane trap, ASAP! This is the best chance at retrieving your cat. Cover the top of the trap with a tarp or blanket. The ONLY food you leave out should be in that trap, behind the trip plate, towards the very back. During severe or harsh weather trap should be checked every 30 minutes . Do not leave the trap set for long periods of time unattended, especially overnight. In general, check the trap every 1-2 hours. The humane society should be able to help with this.
