Do not chase your animal if lost. They take on a fight or flight response for survival. Even calling to them, they may not answer because of fear. I learned this too personally when Titan got out a door that was ajar.
If your cat is missing, please DO NOT put the litter box out. That can attract other strays that will mark their territory and he may not want to come home.
It's really not safe to be outside, especially at night with predators. They are usually scared and not far away from home. Check with neighbors, in garages, crawl spaces, sheds etc. to make sure they are not trapped. Put out signs. If people see him, have them contact you. Call and go to your local shelter.
I saw Titan but he wouldn’t come. I would sit for hours even in the dark just watching and waiting. After 2 1/ 2 weeks I saw him and heard him cry, but he wouldn't come to me. I knew he wanted to come home. I told him I would give him a way back inside and he was free to come in. I went in and propped the door open to his space and he ran in.
