place litter box outside along with any bedding or they frequently sleep with. leaving worn clothing of yours and family members also will help them to trail their scent back home. if your cat is mostly indoors it likely isn’t too far. be sure to use a calm and cheerful voice while calling their name. bring a favorite and smelly wet food or treat with you, cat nip or toys work too while you search. if you’re able to safely and securely bring a pet friend or sibling of theirs with you to help search - definitely do!! it can be SO helpful!!! be sure to talk to ANY and EVERYONE you see outside. construction workers, mail people, delivery drivers, crossing guards, joggers, kids, all neighbors. the more eyes out the better. leave them with a description /show them a picture or give out flyers and hang some up, too and be sure to leave them with instruction on what to do if seen and your contact info. if the cat is never outside it will likely be skittish so they may not want to try and approach just keep an eye on where the cats traveling while contacting you. also keep in mind they feel safest to move around and travel in the very early - morning hours like 5-7 am before much of the world is awake and all is still quiet. also late at night when most of the world is sleeping so be sure to be on watch around those times. lastly, check yourself or have neighbors check in and under ANYTHING possible. cars, decks, porches, in sheds or garages, empty house… anything. best of luck i know the worry all too well.
