This is me outside Augusta ENT, where I go every two weeks for my allergy shots. And yes, that is my guide dog, Loki, standing right beside me. Every two weeks, Loki walks me into this building, finds the check-in machine, finds the elevator, takes me to my seat, and then follows the person giving me my shots when they call my name. When we're done, he finds my seat again and takes me back out of the building. I bring this up because I constantly see people mention allergies whenever service dogs are discussed. "What about the people who are allergic to dogs?" Well, here's your answer. I'm LITERALLY at an allergy clinic with a dog. There are undoubtedly people inside that building who are allergic to dogs. There's a very good chance that at some point, Loki and I have been sitting in the same waiting room, riding the same elevator, or standing right next to someone who is. Wait, your allergies don't matter? They do. You just don't get to use them to take away someone else's independence. The ADA clearly states that allergies and fear of dogs are not valid reasons for denying access or refusing service to people using service animals. If there's a conflict, reasonable accommodations can be made for BOTH people. A blind person doesn't have to choose between getting medical treatment and having the dog they rely on to get through the building. I'm not bringing Loki into that building because I want my dog with me while I get my shots. I'm bringing him because I need him to navigate the building in the first place. So, the next time you think a service dog shouldn't be allowed somewhere because someone might be allergic, just think about where I'm standing every two weeks. An allergy clinic.
