Message from Owner

I’m missing my cat I’ve had since college. At 14, she is a senior cat, but has still shown all of the normal signs of good health. She used to be outdoors most of the time and as she got older, she’s spent more time indoors or in our courtyard. I’m hopeful she’s okay and close by, but would love any help in locating her.

Yes, our garage has been cracked for days now. I’ve gone to all of the neighbors that would answer the door. She did not eat the food I’ve left out at all. I’ll keep trying though

Alex Mack, try not to fear the worst -- Mila would only go as far as necessary to find a secure hiding spot. If she escaped the garage, have you left it cracked open overnight and did you leave food in the garage at the door leading inside, or did you crack that door open also in case that's her point of escape? At the front door, was the food eaten overnight? I understand she's a senior, but cats have remarkable survival instincts and I suspect she's waiting to feel it's safe before retracing her steps. Just be sure you've alerted neighbors and ask if anyone has security cameras and if she's been seen moving about at night. Please don't lose hope. I still believe this strategy can work to get her back inside.

Diana Ellis no luck. There isn’t an entrance to the courtyard because it just separates the townhouse from the garage. I’m unsure if she escaped out of the garage or the front door, but I tried setting up for both scenarios. There are any number of things between where she potentially could be hiding and my house. We live in a series of townhomes and the garages are in the back in an alley with a parallel street’s garages, so alot of car movement there. In the front there is a park that tends to have alot of people until sundown. Still has some after though. There is also a dense forest next to that park with plenty of areas to hide. Only animals I’ve seen there are squirrels, rabbits, and some birds. Only the rabbits are active at all in the evening. In that parallel street I mentioned earlier, there are two homes that have outdoor cats that tend to stay around the house’s property. All in all, hard to pin down where she would be hiding and what would stop her from coming out of hiding. Since she is a senior cat, I’m also unfortunately aware that she may be hiding to pass away in private, but I’m trying to hold out hope she has a little more life left in her.

Alex Mack, if you did as I suggested overnight last night (if not, please implement this strategy immediately) did you observe anything that may suggest why Mila failed to return (stray cats, critters, or people outside after dark, noise or commotion, objects set in her path, etc.)? If you describe what happened overnight I can suggest what to do next. You may still be in the window of opportunity for her to come back on her own so something must be keeping Mila in hiding. If we can figure out what it is, you may have success with this technique before having to try something more complicated.

Diana Ellis thank you for the advice. She is unfortunately still missing, but I’m trying what I can. May I ask why it’s not a good idea to look for her overnight?

Time is of the essence. Cats don’t go far from home. Keep the door or window the kitty left from open 24/7 so they can return, usually very late at night. If unable to do that then crack your garage door open enough for her to get in, 24/7. Knock on neighbors doors with a picture letting them know she got out and ask them to keep an eye out, check Ring cameras for any sighting, post as many flyers as possible with kitty’s picture in your and surrounding neighborhoods. Walk late at night when it’s quiet with a flashlight, looking under every shrub for their shining eyes, softly call the kitty’s name and shake their food. Post on Ring, Nextdoor and check with shelters. Don’t give up. 💕
