However, if the cat appears calm, healthy, and well-groomed, it could just be exploring. **Check for Identification**: Look for a collar or ID tag with contact information. If the cat has one, it’s likely a pet and not lost. **Scan for a Microchip**: If the cat doesn’t have visible ID, you can have it scanned for a microchip at a local vet (emergency vets are open 24/7), pet store, shelter, or one of the shelter’s Microchip Checkpoint Partners across Mecklenburg County (see link below). You can also call 311 to request an officer to come to your home to scan the cat for a microchip. I have personally seen scammers on lost and found sites use AI to alter photos of “found” animals so they can falsely claim they have pictures of a lost pet. **Report as "Found"**: File a "Found Pet Report" with Animal Care & Control in case someone is searching for the cat.
