We just went through this. We got in contact with 2 tracking places. They suggested that we put out feeding stations that included makerel, water ,kibble and your unwashed clothing. Surrond in powder to track pawprints. We got trail cameras too. When you know where your cat is eating,you might want to set up a trap. Cover bottom in leaves and make a trail of food with bowl inside. Cover trap with dark blanket. The feeding stations will keep the cat in the area. We left our door cracked but not everyone can do that. I think that many times the cat comes back and door is closed. 20%of cats come home on own and indoor cats usually stay close. Most cats stay in 4 house radius. Go out at 4am and shine light in trees. Check decks, sheds and porches. Talk to neighbors. I read a man found his cat after 3 months so don't lose hope. I know how you feel. Stay positive. Ours returned so yours will too. Praying and shared
