Also, don’t give up hope! It’s hard to hear but it can take *months* to find a missing cat.

Since she’s on the border of Durham and Raleigh, make sure you check in with both Durham and Wake shelters every day. If you have a missing flyer, it doesn’t hurt to take one to the shelter directly and leave it there with them.

Sharing from a local Facebook page: An indoor cat escaping from home is concerning because they have no experience with the world outside. In some ways this does make them easier to recover than a cat who lives with outdoor access. Studies in cat behavior show that an indoor only cat will immediately seek cover nearby. Instinct tells them to hide and be quiet to avoid letting predators know where they are. They can hide for days before breaking cover. So what should you do if your indoor only cat gets outside? • Immediately do a DETAILED search of every nook and cranny in your yard. Remember to look up in trees, through and under sheds, bushes, decks and cars. Your cat will not make any noise and will not come to you calling. • If your cat is not found in your yard expand to the neighbors on all sides. Do not rely on them to look, but ask permission to see if you can search. Many escaped cats are found within 5 houses. • Post on Nextdoor, Pawboost, Triangle Lost Pets, Neighbors by Ring Cameras, Lost and Found Pets of the Triangle, Wake County Pet Network, etc. Social media can be a great tool to receive sightings of your cat. • Check your yard and surrounding areas again at night. Use a flashlight to check for the eye shine of your scared, hiding kitty. • If you spot your cat, do not chase it. Instead, sit quietly nearby with cat treats. Crinkle the bag and talk softly. Your cat may feel comfortable enough to approach you. If not, you may be able to set a trap nearby to capture your cat. Cary Animal Services does have traps to lend out, but they are often all in use. You can purchase traps at Tractor Supply, Amazon, or ask around to see if a neighbor has one to borrow. Lost and Found Pets of the Triangle https://www.facebook.com/groups/210698287518314/ on Facebook has lots of resources for lost pet owners. Below is a document they share for help in getting an indoor only cat home. Included here is a link for outdoor access cats as well.
