Natalie Chick Rivich, it's not a good idea to use litter to attract a cat back home. An indoor/outdoor cat has already marked the area is a safe way so as not to attract predators, while an escaped indoor cat may be too frightened to approach if their location is revealed to aggressive cats or predators. A familiar blanket or worn teeshirt from inside is a safer bet. I've never used litter in all the times I've been successful recovering a lost cat.
