Just a thought here. Your cat CAN PICK UP THE SCENT FROM THE OTHER THINGS you can put out. I.e. his cat bed, the dirtiest & smelliest piece of clothing from his favorite person, dirty socks, his toys, etc.

This explains why you don’t want to set the litter box outside. These guys can smell it too and could show up at the same time. You just don’t want them around your area at all!
