Use a strong flashlight to check hiding places in the area, such as under porches, behind bushes, behind and between garbage cans and recycling bins. Go back and check the same spots at different times of day; Pumpkin may choose a particular place but he will leave it occasionally and come back later. Repeating the search at different times increases the odds that you will not miss him. Ask neighbors to look for him in their garages. Pumpkin may seek shelter inside an open one, slip in unnoticed and be trapped there when the door is closed. Gift neighbors your contact number so that if they see him they can keep him closed safely in the garage and call you immediately so that you can pick him up. Contact area shelters and check back with them regularly to see if anybody has turned in a cat matching Pumpkin’s description. Someone could find him, think he’s a stray, and surrender him to a humane facility. Call Pumpkin by name every time you go out to look for him or even if you just step outside to do something like get your mail or take out the garbage. He is probably nearby and will be able to hear you. Don’t yell; a loud voice could scare him. Use the same tone that you use to call him inside your home. That helped us find our lost cat after she had been gone for several days. She meowed in response to her name, but even though we could hear her we couldn’t see where she was. We followed the sound and discovered her hiding in a sheltered alcove by a neighbors garage – a place we had already looked multiple times. Good luck! And don’t give up hope. Cats have been known to return after days, weeks, and even months. Still, I hope that Pumpkin is back home with you very soon.
