Cari Johnson I know, you're right. Thanks for trying. You can shelter him at home in a bathroom,I don't know how you feel about that. To shelter a stray chicken temporarily, place it in a large, well-ventilated dog crate or a blocked-off corner of a garage. Provide straw or pine shavings for bedding, fresh water in a tip-proof dish, and basic layer feed while you search for its owner.Securing a found chicken safely and comfortably requires a few specific steps to keep it healthy while you work to reunite it with its family:1. Temporary Shelter & SetupEnclosure: Use a large dog kennel, puppy playpen, or a sturdy box if it's small. Make sure it is completely enclosed and predator-proof against stray dogs, cats, or foxes.Bedding: Line the bottom with straw or pine shavings to keep the chicken warm, comfortable, and to absorb waste.Safety: If keeping them outdoors in a temporary pen, cover the top with mesh or a tarp to protect them from overhead predators (like hawks) and rain.2. Food & HydrationFeed: Provide standard layer feed or cracked corn, which can be easily purchased at a local feed store. If you don't have that yet, they can temporarily eat plain oats, cooked rice, or vegetables like lettuce.Water: Use a heavy, shallow bowl or a specialized poultry waterer so they don't tip it over and get wet.3. Locating the OwnerCheck the Neighborhood: Chickens rarely wander far from home. Walk around the immediate surrounding blocks—if there are other chicken coops, there is a very high chance the bird belongs to one of your immediate neighbors.Social Media: Post photos of the chicken on local neighborhood apps like Nextdoor, the Ring Neighbors app, or local Facebook poultry and lost-and-found pet groups.Official Alerts: Contact your local city or county animal control or SPCA to file a "found animal" report. Owners who lose birds often call these local shelters first.4. Special ConsiderationsThe "Roost" Factor: Chickens naturally like to sleep on elevated surfaces. A small wooden dowel or a clean branch secured across their enclosure will make them feel much more secure at night.Warmth: If you are sheltering the chicken indoors (like in a garage), ensure it has adequate airflow but is protected from drafty fans.

LunaMoon Guerrero where are they in this immediate neighborhood. I’ve been here 30 years and know of none but am aware of a few homes within feet that have chickens & roosters.

Cari Johnson There are a couple of live poultry places in the area where the bird was found, either he's a pet or an escapee. The address I gave is the address for SFACC,there aren't many poultry rescues, or farm animal rescues in SF

Myself and another neighbor had the rooster cornered near a corner but was just too fast for us to physically catch. I’ll certainly annotate that phone # for future reference.

LunaMoon Guerrero No I doubt that very much. We have neighbors near where the rooster was hanging out. 15th St is no where near this location.

LunaMoon Guerrero I posted it on Ring originally b/c I’m not on Next Door. Us neighbors on Flora near Bayview St know of a home behind us that has chickens & roosters. When I first saw the rooster in front of SilverView Terrace Estates on Friday approximately 7pm, I went and knocked/doorbelled on 5 homes on Newhall St that I know could be the home that has the chickens/roosters that we hear daily. Their yard backs up to our Flora St backyards. Not one home answered their door so I have no idea know if their missing their rooster. I also submitted an online report to SF ACC because they were closed. Also saw 2 small dogs running around lost yesterday around the same location. Too many irresponsible pet parents should notice when their pets are missing. I know I’d freak out if my dog or rooster went missing for days.

It may be an escapee from Saba Live poultry, but please don't take it there. Take to SFACC Located at 1200 15th St. They will take in any stray chicken found within city limits. They temporarily house them safely and have established networks to transfer them to specialized rural farm sanctuaries outside the city. You can call their dispatch line at (415) 554-9400.
