I’m seeing a dog, you mention a cat. I’m going to share my standard comments on each. In either case, I hope you are safely reunited with Oreo soon: Cats: For the cat’s people: Please read the advice shared on the Missing Animal Response Network. They have a page specific to lost cat behavior. https://www.missinganimalresponse.com/lost-cat-behavior/ If you have not already, visit neighboring homes and ask them to look into their garages and outbuildings, checking multiple times while sitting patiently, and quietly. Cats get scared when in strange places and won't necessarily bolt for the door when it is opened, and might not even run to a familiar person if they happen to be present. Also, post flyers - don't rely upon everyone having access to on-line posts. Check every logical and illogical place your cat may have gotten into on your property, to name just a few: cabinets/drawers — high and low; behind/under cushions on sofas, liners under sofas; closets; in garages/basements/sheds. Don’t forget to check in with local vets and animal shelters. Some have had success with placing a humane trap in their backyard - luring kitty in with a serving of their regular food; also with leaving clothing/blankets with your and/or their scent. If you have not already, post to Pawboost and/or Nextdoor. Each has their own audience and can be highly effective. Finally, for any reading this, please keep a bowl of water (ideally freshened every 2-3 days) in your garages/outbuildings for those instances when a neighborhood critter happens to find themselves trapped. Dogs: For the dog’s people: You have likely done this already but if not, please post flyers in the area where s/he went missing (and/or last sighted), and knock on doors. Not everyone is on social media. You might also ask folks to check their security monitors... Might capture something useful in the footage. Also remember to check the Pawboost FOUND and SIGHTINGS listings, and with local animal shelters. And phone to ask their current protocols. I have heard that visiting in person to review their intake logs is the best way to get accurate information. Also consider posting on NextDoor. I hope to read a positive update soon.

Post to NextDoor Check shelter website 24petconnect .com City of San Jose Animal Care & Services Help him smell his way home - Creating a dog scent station from a rescue who helps reunite pets. Take an unwashed article of THE OWNERS clothing.( Socks , Sheet, Underware & Hang it in a tree ,on a fence , a pole or edge of roof & put an article of unwashed clothes on ground below. The wind will carry the scent. If there is another dog in the home take that dog's fresh poop and rub it on a rag & hang it high . Open your gates. Your garage door , turn on all your lights. Put a rug or towel on porch with a bowl of water. Do not put the dog's bed or the dog's toys outside. The only scent we want is from the owners. Please do this ASAP. Rain or Shine.A dog can find its way back from miles by following a scent. They don't operate like humans on sight or sound. Also saturate the area with bright flyers.& file a lost report with your local shelters and check those in person in case your dog is there.
