Sue Higbee WHAT HAPPENS TO MISSING PETS? Not every missing pet needs the same plan. A Chihuahua that someone picked up is a completely different case than a skittish German Shepherd running through traffic. A dog that was hit by a car is a different case than a dog sitting in someone's apartment. A dog in a coyote area is a different case than a dog in a neighborhood where people routinely keep found pets. If you don't figure out what's most likely happening, you can waste valuable time doing the wrong things. So before giving advice, ask: What type of dog is it? Friendly or skittish? Small or large? Purebred or mixed breed? High traffic area? Coyote area? Low-income area where found pets are commonly kept? Suburb where pets are usually returned quickly? Is the dog likely running? Or is the dog likely with a person? Then determine which type of case you're dealing with.

The rescue groups you're talking about generally lean toward: Behavioral Recovery Do not chase Feeding stations Cameras Traps Pattern tracking Sighting management I generally lean toward: Marketing / Public Awareness Attention-grabbing posts Emotional storytelling Massive exposure Repeated posting Community involvement Generating sightings quickly First figure out what happened to the dog. Then use the tactics that fit that situation. Not: Every lost dog gets the exact same advice.

Sue Higbee most people don't know to profile a case and determine what type of case it is before they give advice on what to do. Run to the shelter, update your microchip, put clothing in your front yard, put lots of Flyers up are typical Lost Pet suggestions. Most people will share share share or put praying hand emojis or something to the effect of hope you find your pet. What do you think the success ratio of those things are? Have you ever investigated?

Sue Higbee okay since you been doing this for 25 years and you like to use that as a flex let's do this. What are the signs that you look for to determine if a dog is: Stolen Found and kept Running the neighborhood scared Was hit by a car and injured Was hit by a car and killed And once you ascertain what kind of case you think it is what are the suggestions you give them based on that?

Sue Higbee we've had this discussion before. That's great that you've worked with animals for 25 years. However people can still make mistakes after 25 years if they don't look into what they're actually telling people. Just because you repeat something for 25 years doesn't make it right. Personally I would be embarrassed to tell people that if I was giving the wrong information to owners with their pets. Instead of looking into things you continue to say that like it's a defense. It's super important in the beginning to look at what kind of case it is and then specifically what type of help is needed. If you are giving owners the wrong advice for their type of case you are contributing to them not finding their pet. I'm pretty sure that's not what your goal is right? And positive thinking doesn't find pets using the right methods usually does. But sometimes even the right message right away don't work. Typically on French bulldog cases.

Lex Harrison I have worked with animals for over 25 years. Are the police involved?Hartt can also be involved. Flyers need to be put up everywhere including PetSmart Petco Veterinary centers strip malls. I’d rather think positive than negative.

Sue Higbee Frenchies are the top stolen dog. They are also the top found and kept dog in the valley. Hartt is awesome at trapping and tracking pets. But for a case where it is likely a found/ kept /stolen dog - Time is of the essence They need to put a reward with the amount immediately They need to blast that around their immediate vicinity. Tracking and trapping and putting up 100 Flyers is NOT A METHOD THAT WORKS ON THEFT!
