Re your lost cat: Stressful! Please be open to many possibilities. Research indicates most 'lost' cats are hiding, scared (especially if chased or injured), possibly disoriented, locked in or trapped somewhere, usually within 500 metres from where lost (less for indoor cats). Some cats fear making a noise in case it attracts predators, so might not respond to your calls.They can squeeze into the tightest crevices (sometimes get stuck), why very thorough searches are required. Please search all through sheds, garages, under buildings, desks, in drains, bins, skips, in between tall walls and fences, roof and wall cavities, on rooves, up trees, vacant buildings, storage areas etc. (Might be hiding or locked in / trapped somewhere, surviving on insects, etc). Don't trust neighbours to search!!! (Or at least not as thoroughly as you. Some don't search at all. Cats have been found dead too late because neighbours "forgot" / did not bother). You are more likely to do the thorough search required. (Best ask permission to search yourself, or go with your neighbour). Call down drains with strong smelling food. If you can lift the grate and enter the drain, even better. (One cat recently found 500 metres away, down a drain). And /or create a temporary, stable ramp (eg with a branch of wood or towels to cling onto) from inside to outside of the drain, call down & leave strong food outside overnight. 10pm - 5am walks with strong smelling food and torch, when no cars: call calmly, stop, listen, wait. Leave a door open if safe with food inside. Leave strong smelling food (eg tinned Whiskas cat food meat and fish flavour or hot BBQ chicken) and water out overnight, near exit point and possible hiding places / where might be trapped. If food eaten, last resort, a cat trap on level ground in a safe, discreet location. Google how to use safely, monitor closely. Do not leave a trap unattended! Remain nearby. Posters, leaflets and door knock. CCTV cameras. Vets, pounds and animal welfare organisations, regularly with photo. Ensure microchip details are correct, register as lost. Do all at previous address, if puss recently moved home. (One cat recently travelled 26km to previous address, arrived 6 weeks after lost. Another found 500 metres away from where lost, 7 months later). Most cats need to be locked in for 3+ weeks to bond to a new home, otherwise sooner or later might try o head back to previous home or territory. Most cats are escape artists until bonded to new home! (eg breaking through mosquito netting and forcing sliding doors / windows open). Be extra vigilant !! New / timid cats & kittens are prone to hiding / getting stuck under / behind / in, furniture. So also check in / behind / under drawers, wardrobes, low lounges / beds, recliner chairs (don't move leg rest until double-checked), behind fridges where warm, washing machines (always check inside before washing). Be extra careful moving furniture! Behind / under kitchen cupboards & behind rangehoods, are other potential areas to be trapped. Do all of the above many times (in case your cat moves). Track down where any vehicles puss might have entered travelled to, do same there. 😞 🙏 (See Find Booboo page: determined owner perservered for 7+ months before found her skinny cat). Please consider keeping indoors and / or invest in a very secure cat enclosure or catio. (Research has found it adds 10+ years to average age of cats. Safer for cats and wildlife). Be aware of dodgy scams claiming to find or rescue your cat. Seek independent reviews before engaging & providing your personal detail and money. Missing Cat? Quick Search Tips: 🐾 1. Neighbourhood: - Ask neighbours to check sheds/garages, under houses. Your voice may draw the cat out. 2. Inside Home: - Examine appliances, cupboards, and dark corners. 3. Above & Below: - Inspect trees, roof cavities ,fence lines and storm drains, Parklands creeks and waterways. 4. Authorities: - Contact Lost Dogs Home North Melbourne and other pounds (Shelters), vets, local Councils ,also update microchip details. 5. Construction & Cars: - Look in vacant properties, new builds, and vehicles. 6. Outreach: - Distribute flyers, do door-knocking. Early/late searches with food can help. 7. Kittens: - Search tight spaces and warm spots. 8. Holiday Checks: - Think of locked places during holidays and renovations. 9. Schools & Flats:- Seek permission to search school grounds and apartment common areas. 10. Old Addresses:- Alert previous neighbours, Early/late searches at your previous address with food can help . 11. Stay Hydrated: - Place water bowls outside. 12. Make sure you check all Lost pet shelters ; As you know cats are taken by various means , stolen or hitch rides in cars or tradies utes trailers or trapped and dumped in other suburbs or well meaning folk pick them up and drop off to Vets in other suburbs .

Ask your neighbours to look through their sheds and garages in case your cat is locked up, or get permission to look yourself as they are more likely to come out of hiding with a familiar voice. Also, check under the houses especially if they are the old type on stumps. Don't forget the fence line between neighbours property, cats can get stuck between buildings and the fences especially on the new properties where houses are very close together.Just remember cats can also get stuck in neighbours backyards (if they have been spooked) making it difficult to climb back especially if it is a colour bonded fence (slippery surface). Make sure you look through any cupboards, wardrobes washing machines dryers where they can hide in dark cosy corners. Be mindful when it is cold cats (especially kittens that love to hide) will look for a heat source like fridge and freezer motors if there is an opening at the back, also stand-alone stove cookers. Look up, and see if there are any large trees the cat can climb and get stuck , check neighbours' and your own roof on top and inside cavity, do not forget any storm drains in the area. Contact the Lost Dogs Home North Melbourne or other pounds and check online to see if your cat has been picked up don't rely on a phone call sometimes things get missed and microchips can be faulty and not scan or migrate under the skin to other body parts and are not picked up always ask if the animal has had a full body scan when speaking to the Pounds/ Shelters. You may have to ring or email for an appointment. Check the Pounds/Shelters websites as they are always changing. Notify your local council and Vets in your area and report them missing. If microchipped, make sure your details are up to date and flag your cat as missing. Check if there are any vacant houses, as there was one lady whose cat had got itself locked in, as it had a pet flap that worked one way. Be on the lookout for any new construction eg. new homes ,factories, shops as they might have wandered in an got locked in. Always check your cars eg. engine, back of utes any visiting tradies just in case your cat has hitched a ride. Just remember your neighbours may not be on Facebook or on this site especially some elderly and non-English speaking folks . So don't rely on social media solely to find your pet. You will have to physically door knock take flyers with a pic of your cat. Don't forget to try the early 3am morning/late evening walk around when it's quiet, then they can hear your voice and will more likely come to you. Take a good torch and dry food and or roast chicken pieces to lure them out of hiding, you may have to take a cat carrier with you, so your cat if found is secure. Kittens are tricky customers, they look for a heat source but will hide in the most amazing places, you need to look in all the nooks and crannies around inside(couches ,beds,drawers) and outside your house. If new to your family ,usually they can be found hiding in dark secluded places like under houses ,sheds between fence lines check any cars inside and out any visiting tradie utes and trailers ,storm drains. Be mindful people have been on holidays ,cats get locked in garages sheds or houses ,it is a good time to do early or late walk around when it is quiet as you can hear if they are stuck , follow instructions above many people have great success with this . Also look if there are renovations or new builds in the area where they can get locked in , increase your search to blocks and extra streets ,if you cat has been spooked it may have travelled through many backyards . If you are near any schools get permission to check the grounds, sheds under buildings. If you live in an apartment(high rise) with underground parking and storage areas check every nook and cranny of the area, if you have a balcony check your neighbours as well especially if there are any vacant ones around. Leave some old clothing of yours ( it will have your scent on it)out for bedding . Put posters all around the communal spaces possible on your building and nearby apartments in your area . Your cat might be trying to go back to its previous address let your old neighbours know to keep an eye open and to contact you. Also, try early and late-night walkarounds at your old address.
