Recommend to follow Kimberley Steel’s post. Critical first step, recommend reporting to MVAS is you’ve not done yet. Mission Viejo Animal Services Dispatch: +1 (949) 470-3045 Also, it’s imperative that “searching” is not done in large groups or by concerned untrained family/friends/neighbors in a frantic manner. Natural response to this extremely emotional event. Search quiet. Do not call dog’s name. Do not clap or whistle. No flashlights. See the dog, call MVAS and report sighting. No one is going to “catch” a new rescue that is currently experiencing what is the “state of flight”. I’m happy to send best practices and more info to help you and your family prioritize actions now needed. It is a known phenomenon that searching for a dog in flight, by calling out its name, following it by car or by foot, and increasing activity with kind “searchers” in the initial lost location perimeter with the intent to help — in fact, increases time to recover and also increases immediate known risk factors, like running into traffic, moving further away from lost location instead of tracking back, and expediting the paw-pad injuries due to running, which then in turn may affect how a larger lost dog can fend for itself overnight if needed (outrunning coyotes).

Your location where lost is covered by the Mission Viejo Animal Shelter. Please call there to make them aware of your missing dog. Animal Services Officers are on duty from 7 am to 10 pm to respond to the following calls for service: stray dogs running loose, found animals for pick-up, and deceased animals. Please call their main phone line (949-470-3045) and press 2 to leave a message and an Officer will respond as soon as possible.

🚨 LOST DOG – WHAT TO DO IMMEDIATELY TO HELP BRING YOUR DOG HOME 🚨 If your dog is missing, follow these critical steps right away: 🏠 Bring Them Home with Scent and Access • Hang dirty laundry (T-shirts, socks, shoes) high on a fence or branch to allow the wind to carry the scent - use items worn by the person your dog is most bonded with. • Dogs can smell home from miles away - your scent can guide them back. • Leave an access point open such as a cracked garage or front door in case they return. • Sleep near the front door if possible - your presence may help them feel safe enough to come back. • If you have other pets, keep them secured in a separate room. 📣 Post Signs & Notify Everyone • Make signs with a clear photo and your contact info. • Put signs everywhere - on poles, street corners, and especially on doorsteps in the neighborhood. • Ask neighbors to check security cameras (e.g., Ring) for sightings. 🌐 Spread the Word Online • Post on local: • Lost & Found Facebook groups • Nextdoor • PawBoost • Ring Neighbors app • Include your contact info, dog’s name, and location last seen. 🐶 Microchip & Shelter Alerts • If your dog is microchipped, notify the chip company immediately and mark your pet as lost. • Call ALL nearby animal shelters and rescues, and leave a detailed voicemail if no one answers. Follow up daily. ⚠️ Beware of Scams • Do NOT send money or provide any verification codes. • Scammers often pretend to have your pet and demand payment. • A real finder will be happy to help and won’t ask for money.
