Check area shelters daily. Put up posters. How to Find a Lost Dog: https://youtu.be/8cKxfWUXBnY
Please post on Lost and Found Pets of North Carolina, Pawboost, Nextdoor, and contact the your County Animal Center and area shelters (be sure to look at their found dog pages every day!).
FOOD: Fire up your grill (portable propane grills from Walmart work great) and cook BACON, chicken, hot dogs, - the smell of food on the grill can help bring the doggie closer to home. Cook on the grill several times a day. Spread bacon grease on rags and put in tree branches (up as high as you can reach) leading to the point of escape.
Dogs really love bacon, vienna sausage, rotisserie chicken, especially KFC chicken. They can smell chicken cooking from several miles away.
FOOD STATION: Leave a bowl of water and a bowl with some bacon, deboned rotisserie chicken, favorite wet dog food, vienna sausage in a bowl (the food and water is referred to as a food station) at the point of escape.

CROCK POT: Put fatty meat in a crock pot and cook outside on porch/patio. You can also crack your garage door or back door and lure them with the crock pot cooking.
LIQUID SMOKE: Buy liquid smoke from the grocery store/Walmart and mix with water in a spray bottle. Set the spray setting to "stream" and thoroughly spray the upper branches of trees and bushes close to where your doggie escaped from and leading to any food station. The wind will carry the scent. Spray in a wagon wheel pattern every 2 days.
SCENT ITEMS: Put your (the owner's) unlaundered items such as socks, shirts, pillowcases in the upper branches of bushes and trees close to the point of escape. Also, put a dirty scent item next to the food station. Your scent (the owner's scent) can help lure the doggie closer to home. A dog's sense of smell is incredible.
COMPANION DOG: When walking around searching during the day, you may want to take your companion dog on a leash to help lure him/her.
OLDER DOGS: Older dogs tend to seek water sources (ponds, lakes, creeks), walk downhill, and walk along fence lines. Dogs also travel along railroad tracks and utility eats.
YOUR DOG'S SCENT ITEMS, PET TRACKER: In case you may need to contact a pet tracker to help search, take any items that have the doggie's scent (dog's fur under beds, toys, etc.) and place in separate zip lock bags and put into the freezer.

DO NOT CHASE! These tips in the video link below are extremely helpful. When dogs are lost, they go into panic/survival mode and many times don't even recognize their owners.

SIGNS: Not everyone uses social media. Signs are extremely important to get the word out.
FACEBOOK COMMUNITY PAGE: Consider setting up a FB Community page for your furbaby. You can specify certain zip codes to which you can run ads. FB users in those zip codes will see the ads. The ads don't cost very much.
FOR MICROCHIPPED DOGS: Please contact the microchip company and make sure your contact info is current and report your pet as missing.
