UPDATE: I went back to check on the cat. The cat was still there, they're living in a cardboard box on the corner. I tried to retrieve the cat and a man on the street asked me about the cat. They asked if it was mine, I explained no but it appears to be a stray or abandoned and the man told me that he believed the cat was bein used by the owner of a kitchen around the corner. We spoke with the owner(?), and he would not claim the cat as his own and was very defensive went I brought up how he was living in a box and wanted to make sure he was OK. He got angry and told that since it's not my cat and that I should not care. I explained that since the cat seems to be generally taken care of, that I would trust him to continue to take of the animal. His was response was that he did not care what I thought and he returned to his work. I left after that as I am not confrontational and didn't want to cause a scene. Since the owner would not admit to owning the cat, I do believe it to be either a stray or missing pet that he feeding to keep pests away from his store. There is a non-0 chance that if someone braver or more confrontational than I goes to the listed location after 11PM or 12AM that the cat may still be there - unless he actually retrieves the cat after closing - which may be the best scenario unless it is actually a missing pet.

Hi, I haven't been able to do that yet as I met the cat on my way from work to the supermarket. I am wondering if he's a stray, abandoned or maybe an outdoor cat. It's really the lack of a collar that makes me think he's one of the first two options. I plan on making my way back there to see if he's still there. (I made this Facebook account solely to reply to people about this cat as I didn't know how PawBoost worked)

Can you bring kitty inside to safety, food and water and then take to a vet to scan for chip? The vet may also recognize the kitty and be able to contact its owners. Check with other local vets as well and contact the police. Also post fliers. And beware of bad actors!!! Also keep checking Nextdoor and Pawboost for cats found in and near your zip code.
