Message from Finder

This poor sweet little girl has been roaming our area for about 7 days now as I’m hearing from neighbors around us. I’ve walked the streets with her, looking for her owners and taken her to the vet to be scanned and no chip was found. I’ve had her for 2 days. I’m going to be giving her to another family to foster. I will fill that info when I find someone to foster.

You can’t give this dog away! There are laws about lost and found pets. In the future, if you cannot hold a loose pet for the 14 day hold required by your county, then don’t pick up any! It’s situations like this one that make it so the pet doesn’t get reunified with the owner. It’s very frustrating. So, before I give you a list of recommendations, which can ensure a reasonable search on your part, I want to educate you about the law. Many folks do not know the there are even laws about pets in California. Logically, when you find a loose pet, the first thought should be, I wonder where his family or owner is? Sadly, some people are very selfish & decide they want to keep a found pet, or sell it. Should someone make that choice they can be criminally charged with Grand Theft, a FELONY offense in California (§ 487e), in this case for sure due to the value of the dog. With all that being said, here are some suggestions that should ensure that you make a good faith effort to reunite this pup with his/her owner. First, please check Facebook PawBoost posts and look to see if the dog is posted and you may find his family this way. Check: Victorville, CA - Lost Dogs, Cats & Pets - PawBoost, or Hemet, CA - Lost Dogs, Cats & Pets - PawBoost, or Perris, CA - Lost Dog, Cats & Pets - PawBoost Also please check on the PawBoost website, PawBoost.com because you can get a wider range of lost pets, and see if the dog is posted as LOST. You can do searches by breed, color, location, etc. If the pup isn’t posted then please make a PawBoost post. INCLUDE your phone number where it asks for it because it allows for the reunification to be much easier for you and the owner. But, do NOT post your # in the body of your post. Please keep checking the post at least several times daily, and all new LOST posts, until the owner is found. Also: ❌IMPORTANT: File a found pet report (with photo) with the closest shelter in day one. Some shelter websites allow to file the report on their webpage. Also, browse through their lost pet logs. The pet logs are Lost & Found pet reports from pet owner/ finders who either call in or file online reports to the shelter. ❌ Have the pup scanned for a microchip at a vet or a shelter/animal services. If a microchip is found, it is your obligation to deliver the pup to your local animal control agency (shelter) to have them try to contact the owner and return the pet. ❌Post on various other local lost/found pet forums on Facebook; also Next Door, Craigslist, 24PetConnect. Check Lost Pet reports at nearby shelters. Owners will file a lost pet report at a shelter. ❌You can foster the pup for the mandatory hold time for your county, which I think is 14 days. BUT you must be actively looking for the owner. You can ONLY adopt from a shelter or a bonafide rescue. Maybe you are in cahoots with some rescue. They’re are some dishonest ones out there. If you are fostering, make a “found pet” poster (free in PawBoost) and make copies on NEON paper, posting them around your neighborhood., local stores, schools, vets. 80% of lost pets are found within ONE mile of home, so check your local area and speak with neighbors. Remember, some older adults do not use social media. ❌ Watch out for scammers! Verify ownership through: dog recognition of owner; vet records, photos & media; social media…🐾 Source: https://www.ccspca.com/blog-spca/found-a-stray-the-facts-of-pet-ownership/
