I think this is a Russian Blue cat.

This cat wandered into my back yard and stayed last fall. I don't think it's feral but shrinks away if you try to pet.

Do you think someone would be able to get close enough to wave a microchip reader over it, so long as the cat understood the person was not trying to actually pet or touch it? May want to ask on Nextdoor if there is anyone with a microchip reader that can come to your location to scan, or if there is anyone working in rescue that can help trap.
