Ues these instructions to contact rescues to get him into foster care and eventually adopted. Search for Dog and Cat Rescue Organizations Go to www.adoptapet.com. 1. Click on the link “Find a Shelter” toward the top of the screen. Please note that this is a bit of a misnomer. Most of the entities registered at adoptapet are rescue organizations. Most do not have a building. They use foster homes to house their foster animals. The number of foster homes dictates the number of animals an organization can have in its foster system. 2. When you click on the Find a Shelter link, you can choose Animal shelters near me, Dog shelters near me, or Cat shelters near me. I suggest you click on the link of the species for which you need a rescue. 3. The next few screens will list rescues or shelters on the left-hand side of the screen with a few photos of animals available for adoption. You’ll see a button that says View shelter and underneath that is the address. If you click on the View shelter button, the next screen will give the contact information. 4. Be aware that many organizations don’t have a phone number, so you’ll have to send out emails. I recommend attaching a photo of the animal. Information to include in your voicemails and emails: Name, gender, and whether the animal is spayed (females)/neutered (males) and current on vaccinations. Is the animal child, dog, or cat-friendly? If there are two or more animals who need a new home, are any of them bonded, i.e., do two of them need to be adopted together? If not, then you can search for several rescues to take one each. You’ll need to give all medical documents from the animal’s/animals’ care to the rescue(s). They need a baseline medical history. Be aware that dogs and cats must stay current on a Rabies vaccination and many organizations may require a Rabies vaccine before they’ll take the animal(s). A donation per animal is more than a good idea. The organization will need to take the animal(s) to the vet to fill in any holes in their medical care. This includes spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and any other medical care to get them ready for adoption. Rescue organizations do not receive funding from the government—local, state, or federal.
