Hi, my name is Karin. I’m a Cat Lover, Certified Cat Behaviorist, and I run a Cat Rescue. Please ignore any negative comments — accidents happen, and even indoor cats can slip out. You’re not alone. 1. ACT FAST — FIRST 24–48 HOURS ARE CRITICAL Cats usually stay very close to home at first. Go out immediately, then again at Dusk & Dawn — the quietest times when they can hear you and their instincts are active. Do this every day: Call their name calmly, Shake treats or use sounds they know Walk slowly around your home and yard and LISTEN when you call their name 2. WHERE TO SEARCH-Think like a cat — scared cats hide, not run. Look LOW: Under decks, Under sheds, Under porches, Inside garages/sheds (ask neighbors to check), Abandoned cars, junk piles, empty lots Look HIGH: Trees, Roofs,Ledges, Anywhere a chased cat might climb Start with a 1-mile radius and expand a little each day. 3. CONTACT EVERYONE Send a photo of your cat to: Your vet, Nearby vets, Local rescues, SPCA, If your cat isn’t chipped, this is especially important. YES — You CAN call the police (the right way). Call your municipal building, NOT 911 or dispatch. Ask them to pass your cat’s description to officers on duty. Many officers are pet owners — they understand the fear and will keep an eye out while driving. 4. SCENT ITEMS (Helpful but not magic) You can put out: Bedding, Clothing, Litterbox But scent only works if your cat is close enough and the wind is right. Cats can smell far distances (up to 4 miles!) under ideal conditions, but actively searching is still the #1 way to find them. 5. SET A HUMANE TRAP — THIS IS IMPORTANT Scared cats often run from their owners, even if they recognize you. A trap lets them walk in on their own. How to set it up: Put the closed end against a sliding door (if you have one- this works great!) so it looks like they can walk straight through into the house. Or maybe a basement window. And cover as explained below EXCEPT the open end — they must see the “exit.” If you don’t have either of these just setting it up next to you home (deck Patio, garage (leaving a gap for them to get inside garage Cover the trap with a blanket/ then tarp this keeps it warm and dry in winter months and a sheet and tarp in summer ,Use light-smelling food (you don’t want raccoons, skunks or any other critters).A piece of your clothing inside can help. 6. HOW LONG IT CAN TAKE Most cats come home within 1–2 weeks, but don’t stop searching. I’ve helped many people with 100% success using these steps —I even one cat who took 4 weeks because she found another food source.(a lot of people set up “feeding stations” for feral cats But Calling your cat daily helps them stay close to home. 7. EXTRA HELP Someone on Nextdoor offers free drone searches for lost pets — worth trying. I truly hope your kitty comes home soon. My prayers are with you. Please ignore the negative comments — people who haven’t lost a pet don’t understand the fear. I’m one of the biggest cat lovers out there, and I want every lost cat to make it home safe. And I pray you will find yours JUST NEVER give up!!
