Dogs frequently retrace their path & circle back by home or the spot they went missing from. Put scent items (dirty laundry, dog bedding, smelly warm food) outside asap to help the dog find the way back by scent. Ideally put these items in view of a security or doorbell camera that will notify folks if the dog comes back by, especially late at night.
