FOUND.PET.PROTOCOLS. You've probably already know all this.. Please READ & FOLLOW the tips below as they have proven to be very successful! If not contained, Please contain him/her. Put a sign in your yard, FOUND DOG.. owners usually drive around looking for their missing pet.. Did he have a rabies tag? .. if so can be traced back to who purchased tag.. vet or county animal control can do it.. post on 24petconnect.. under found section... there is also a lost section and a section for tag #.. listing by county and zip code.. also post on nextdoor and pawboost.. great sites.. and pet smart, vet or animal control can check for a chip.. ******Best websites 24petconnect pawboost and nextdoor .. report to animal control within 24 hrs in county he/she was found. It's NC law to notify animal control when find a stray.. and there's a stray hold period before can rehome ..talk to animal control...And Any other community page. Download ring camera app and check footage and ask neighbors to check theirs, maybe dan see which way he/she came from ACTION PLAN 📌 : Contain the pet so it is safe from danger and escaping. Scan for a microchip. If has rabies tag.. call # on tag .. vet or animal shelter and they can give you info of who purchased tag and pet stores ******Very important...******* ***Notify animal control within 24 hrs of finding, if possible. MOST ANIMAL SHELTERS ARE CLOSED AFTER NOON ON SATURDAY UNTIL MONDAY MORNING ***** notify them is a NC Law and alot of people don't realize that. Pets are considered personal property in NC. Owners usually contact them 1st. Don't have to turn animal into them, you can keep during stray hold, and animals are happier when the finder is able to do that. Use this Free Service : http://www.lostmydoggie.com or http://www.lostmykitty.com to send an alert to nearby Vets, Shelters & Rescues. Flyers: Strategically use flyers close to the site you found the pet and up to three miles(for dogs and one mile for cats, initially) surrounding the area at high traffic intersections. Check the lost pet photo albums on our page to see if this pet has been listed as Lost. IMPORTANT❗️ 🔴You DO NOT usually have to turn the Pet into the shelter, but you must file a found animal report. Please check with your local authorities for requirements as they vary. 🔴You must then make an attempt to find the owner. Do not rehome the pet until the legal stray hold period passes(ask animal control how long to hold the pet). 🔴Be sure to get proof of ownership from anyone claiming the pet.Proof can be vet records/photos/adoption or sale papers. People may try to falsely claim this Pet. When in doubt have animal control mediate. ***THINK LOST 🛑 NOT STRAY! Pets can go from pristine shape to homeless looking in a matter of a day. Found Tips in Detail: - MICROCHIP/ID: Take pet to any vet or shelter to scan for a microchip. This should be free. Have them scan the entire body as chips often move. If no chip is found you can try checking again at a different facility in case it were missed. If wearing a collar, check inside for contact info as we sometimes find it written there. Using any ID or Rabies tags, try to track down owner via vet on rabies tag through this link https://petbridge.org/rabies/rabies-tag-search/ - GET OUT THE WORD: Post found signs/flyers in the area where found, talk to neighbors in that area & if “found dog”, walking the dog in the area often works. Use any community resources like HOA listserves/groups/fb pages. Place a found dog ad in local newspaper (usually free). Try to post on local yard sale pages/groups/websites. Remember that the owner may not have Internet access, so you need to get out the word in different ways. http://search.lostpetusa.net/search.aspx?find-help=true. (5) PLACE FLYERS at the location where you found the pet. Design large NEON FLYERS(weather protected) with just FOUND DOG or FOUND CAT at the top in LARGE LETTERS. A clear picture IN THE MIDDLE and your phone number in LARGE SIZE at the BOTTOM. You don’t need to place many, just strategically place them where the most people relevant to this pet will see them. Usually 3 miles around for a dog initially, and a few blocks for a cat.
