What an awful situation for you and your pig. That woman is in a lot of trouble and better find your pig. This is usually for dogs but I believe a pig would apply here. Here’s some info about tracking & finding your stolen pet: Pets are considered personal property in California, so by law, “reasonable efforts” must be made to locate the owner and return the pet. And if the value of your stolen pet is over $950, that is Grand Theft, a felony, otherwise the theft charge would be a misdemeanor. On “day one” a finder is required to notify the nearest shelter that they found the pet and have possession of the pet. Also, the finder needs to check for the pet a microchip. If a microchip is found, then the finder is required to take the found pet to the nearest shelter for the shelter to reunite the pet with the owner. 📌If you haven’t already, report this to your local law enforcement & make sure you get a case number. I helped a dog owner in recovering her stolen dog and Law Enforcement was instrumental in assisting just by calling the thief. Since you have this woman’s # they will be glad to contact her and have a little conversation. If you have a phone number, LE may be able to track down the home location as well. It seems that the Finder of your dog knows they are required to return a found dog. If you believe you know the location of your dog, then law enforcement may need to help you retrieve your pup. Be aware you may have to be persistent to get the help you need. 📌Also call and report to Animal Services(AS), as this BOTH an Animal Services & a Law Enforcement case. Don’t be shy. You have to be proactive to find your dog. 📌Here are some things you need to do besides making the LE & AS reports: 📍You will want to alert any database where your pup is registered (license and/or microchip). That way, you’ll receive a notification if someone tries to re-register your dog. Make sure your information is up to date. 📍Report your stolen dog to all the shelters in a big radius 50-100 miles. (In your county many of the shelters are all on the same system) 📍If you haven’t done so yet, post your pup on your local PawBoost, (that may be Victorville, CA - Lost Dogs, Cats & Pets - on Facebook) and look to see if your pup is posted as FOUND. If not, then post a STOLEN post. There is no cost for basic but do include your phone number where it asks for it, and NOT in the body of your post. This makes it a lot easier for a finder of your pup to get ahold of you when they find your pup. You can also look at PawBoost by using a browser. This option broadens the search-base quite a bit more. You can do searches by breed, color, etc. 📍Continue to post recent photos to your social media groups on Facebook, including your local PawBoost, Next Door, 24PetConnect, etc., with a post explaining this theft (Grand Theft?) & the circumstances. There are Facebook groups for Stolen Dogs, regionally & by breeds. 📍Post & look on Craigslist, not just locally, but regionally as the thief may try to “rehome” your pup. With any luck, you may find your pup quickly, since the thief may change her mind, and return your pup. Sometimes though, a thief will “dump” a pet instead. 📍Plan on making “STOLEN” flyers to let people know about the dognapping(PawBoost has flyer templates). This can be done by making STOLEN posters (flyers) with NEON paper (and posters) and posting places such as your neighborhood; local connivence stores; your veterinarian & local veterinarians; pet stores; anywhere you can! Hand flyers out too. Use page protectors for your flyers when posting outside. Staple up high on telephone poles if they are wood, otherwise, use clear packing tape. 📍Use social media, and even call your local news & radio stations, and other media outlets with your story. The further the word spreads, the more people will potentially recognize your stolen dog and the more pressure the dog thief will feel, and then hopefully, will do the right thing. 📍Be aware that a lost dog seems to bring out people who want to “get over” on you. PLEASE watch out for scammers. Do NOT offer a reward. You are NOT required to give anybody money to return your dog. You can offer a reward, but it often isn’t very helpful. 📍If the dog napper attempts to ask for money for returning your dog, Do NOT pay a cent, & contact law enforcement. No one should ever have to pay to for their pet to be returned to them. (Just fees from the local shelter…). 📍Finally, get a notebook or use an app to document when you take any action on your dog’s case, with the date, time, who, what happened, phone number, or what you did, etc. This may seem irrelevant, but in prosecuting a case it will prove helpful. It will also help you keep track of whom you have been in contact. Keep phone numbers, messages and emails.
