Jim McCauley I was at the pound once looking for a dog and a family was there to claim their dog who had broken out of the yard. The dog had been hit by a car, so the medical fees and holding fees for being impounded were more than the family could pay and there weren't payment plans. They left without their dog.

Debbie Hess, and thank you for rescuing dogs for 40 years! Of course you’re bitter about all this preventable suffering. I’m glad you somehow find the strength to persist. You’re so right about the breeding. We need better laws and they need to be enforced. And we also need more affordable spay and neuter. That’s become really hard to find. And we need more affordable housing that accepts dogs, and a fairer economy, and we need to get venture capital out of veterinary care. Because we also have so many people who love their pets but can’t afford to take care of them. My last foster dog was a pit bull puppy with a broken leg who came up from California on a rescue transport. She’s back at my local humane society now for some medical stuff and will be up for adoption soon. I have high hopes for her future here in the Pacific Northwest where the situation isn’t nearly as bad. (It’s not great, though. We still have too many dogs and not enough homes.) I wish every dog (and cat) had that chance.
