Message from Owner

Our cat, Stripes, got out Tuesday night (6/16) and hasn’t returned home yet. He is friendly, but can sometimes be wary of new people. He loves tuna and all manner of kitty treats. If you spot him, please share any information you can! Thank you!

♦️Leave a baby monitor outside (preferably with a camera, not just sound). They often come home in the middle of the night when all is quiet. If you hear meowing, open your door! ♦️If you have a garage or low-level window, keep it ajar and place sardines and dirty clothes there should your cat come home on his own, even at night! Your cat is likely hiding in a bush or behind a shed or structure close to the escaped area. ♦️New Ring search party for lost pets. ➡️ Tap “Search Party on Ring Neighborhood and hit right arrow” under your dog’s picture to start “pet search party” BUT do NOT send codes or $ to anyone! ♦️Hire a drone company (WITH thermal imaging ability when there’s snow on the ground! Most DO charge. ♦️Do NOT send $ or codes to anyone! Scams on every lost pet page. ♦️I’ve heard conflicting thoughts on whether to leave kitty litter boxes & food out to lure cats back home. This is what I’ve read, but do some research if you do: “Some coyote trappers use cat litter as bait. Ever wonder why cats bury their waste? They don't want to advertise their presence to predators! A litter box placed or sprinkled around the home may put your cat at risk of being snatched by a predator before you can get him back in the house.” ♦️I was told cats do not travel far, so also share to your *local* township Facebook pages, Ring Neighborhood, Nextdoor app AND flood your development that you live in with fliers. Fliers generate sightings. Lawn signs are very effective, eye-catching and waterproof. Put them at nearby intersections. ♦️From Er No: “Our friend was told to put out clothing, ohh with her smell and stand in ONE spot for a half hour, calling him...he was missing 2 weeks. If you walk around calling them, they keep changing direction to follow your voice and cannot hone in on where you are. She put out clothing she wore 12 hours, then stood at her back fence for over 45 minutes, calling him. She went inside and within 1 hour, he showed up. It is worth a try.” ♦️From West Milford Lost Pets: “TINKER has been FOUND❤️ Maryann stayed on the porch for hours last night, playing soft music that was familiar to Tinker, and with her blanket and food, and did not see her. When she got up this morning, she went into the woods with her treats and breakfast, and TINKER came out very warily and wouldn’t approach, but by talking softly and preparing Tinker’s breakfast Tinker slowly approached and came up to her as she sat quietly. Maryann scooped her up and ran into the house, with her girl safe in her arms” ♦️At latest sighting set a humane trap & surveillance cameras. ♦️This worked for another person recently: She “sat out in the dark in a lawn chair and called softly to him. He came running.” ♦️When posting to any missing pet pages, be VERY careful of scams. Do not send $ or codes to anyone. Often scammers will say “Go to Instagram” <— but don’t! Most lost pets are networked in Facebook & Nextdoor app. Many reputable trappers & trackers are volunteers in NJ and do not charge. ♦️Go in person to local shelters to see if your cat is there.

🐈‍⬛LOST CATS: Please follow my personal advice. I have helped many people recover their lost house cats. Your cat is very close to home! Please follow my (original) advice. No litter box outside, no food outside. It will attract other animals including other cats who will keep your cat away if trying to return home. If you have a garage- set and MONITOR a humane cat trap on your garage at morning dusk and evening dusk especially. Use to food I lost below. Cover the trap with a towel. ⬇️ Distribute Flyers- by knocking on doors to your neighbors and handing them out, and posted them on poles etc. as well even to any businesses close by? This step is crucial to recovering your cat! Speak to people in person. I cannot stress enough, the importance of knocking on doors speaking to people and handing them a “lost cat” flyer at the same time. This is how you get sightings and this is what will bring your cat home. GARAGE- If you have a garage set and monitor the humane trap in the garage leaving the garage open a little for the cat to find its way in. Please use the food I recommend and heat in microwave for 10 seconds before putting in the human trap. Must be home and MONITOR the trap. If you get a sighting you need to set and MONITOR a humane trap at the sighting location right away and at morning dusk. *NEVER LEAVE A TRAP UNATTENDED. You can use rotisserie chicken and Friskies Whitefish and Sardines canned food as bait. Cats usually stay within a one mile radius from home. Most are found very close to home as in a few houses away or next street over. They are usually found (after getting sightings and with trapping) very close to their own home. Some come home on their own, usually in the overnight hours. Concentrate on canvassing your own neighborhood, however, in case the sighting was not of your cat. Cats don’t usually go far. They usually will try to return home between 10 PM and 5 AM with peak hours being 3-5 AM. Put a worn shirt of yours on your porch or near the door and continue to replace with a fresh one daily. Do NOT put a litter box outside. It will attract male unneutered cats who will spray property and chase your cat away if trying to return home. Some cats stay hidden for 3 weeks traveling at night. Flyers generate sightings.
